For lunch meat I bought DH chopped ham which 1.79/lb at MB. But he loves it. I also like to cook extra chicken to make chix salad in the food processor. I am good for a tomato and mayo sandwich , cukes too if I have it, but prolly kids dont want just that. If you have the butterball turkey bacon coupons for S&S this week that would make cheap BLTs.Also still have tuna from RA deal so I am not buying much for lunches except cheese for DHs grilled chopped ham and cheese

Thanks everyone for your repliesheart I've written down all your ideas and I'm going to sit with my kids and find out lunch ideas they like out of this list. I did that with dinners, and now I make sure to have at least 1 fav dinner per kid (4 kids) per week, so I guess I've got to refigure lunch. Our lunch tickets for school went up to 2.30 per ticket- for me that is now OVER $50 a week for lunch tickets if I went that way. I know it's still summer but I'm dreading lunches for school again- and with the high prices at Shaw's for deli- I'm frustrated. I didn't know you could freeze sandwich meat and have it come out tasting ok?

Do you think we could use this at Shaw's? By "not valid with any other offer" does that mean no no Qs with it?
Interesting deal and they said they were playing around with Groupon this weekend during their conference call earlier this week but mainly in the Chicago area. But its interesting they are charging $9 for $15 in ice cream which means they are getting $4.50. But I think the problem their running into that market is that Walmart and some other players are getting very aggressive.

I have been doing the same as kgerv/Karen...buy 1/4 lb of whatever is on sale and is a Hannaford brand. It is not easy to keep lunchmeat stocked with a larger family, actually we don't keep it stocked but get it daily just about as we are going by the store anyway. They call us their "favorite customers" or "favorite daily family" etc, etc. because we are there all.the.time, especially in the Summer when the kids are here for all meals.
I use Hannaford too for the most part for deli meat. Some of the stuff is up $1/lb or so (particularly Thin N Trim and Sara Lee sale pricing) in the past few months at my store, but Inspirations is holding steady at $6.99/lb with select products at $5.99/lb and I can always find something I like at $5.99/lb whether it'd be Inspirations, Thin N Trim, or Sara Lee which is what is on my rotation. TJ's has a few good things at $5.99/lb and some cheeses at $5ish per lb but I buy their deli products when I do out of convenience since their stuff is prepacked. Then I usually add an Inspirations cheese, or swiss or provolone otherwise depending on current sales. Really not much coupons from what I see other than LOL, which I do not buy, though I do get the Sara Lee ones from time to time. I view S&S and Shaw's as being a good $2/lb or so more than Hannaford.

I freeze pre-packaged lunchmeat (mainly ham & turkey) all the time. One of my friends mentioned it years back and I have done it ever since. It is a huge savings to get it on sale. When it thaws, it is sometimes a very little bit "wet" (not slimy though) - sounds kind of gross, but just pat it with a paper towel and it is good to go. I recommend it.

Wow, I'm amazed at the prices you guys get. Inspirations lunchmeat here is 7.99 - 9.99/lb regularly, and we get 6.99/lb on sale. When we're lucky.

unfortunately, you guys are paying the transportation markups.
fewer stores, and farther away = greater cost to transport for Shaws. And they're happily passing that on to the consumer knowing you guys don't have a choice but to go to the store.

Frown

i bet they'd do more of that here, too, if they could get away with it. but there's quite a lot of competition and that makes it harder for them to do. plus kind of hard to justify, when you're close to transportation hubs, and have so many stores within a small radius.

I have been going to walmart for lunch meats. there are usually some sales. might not be the BEST quality. but the boys in this house dont care.
quesadilla's and grilled cheese happen alot here for lunch too. no one but me likes mayo in this house so no tuna or egg salad.. crazy boys
Best quality lunch meat is the one you make yourself. Just another idea to throw into the pot. Buy marked down whole turkey breast and a roast beef. Season them up and pop in oven to roast. When it comes out let it cool completely. Then slice it into managable weekly/daily portions and freeze the rest.

You may pay $8.99/lb at the deli for roast beef but only $2.49/lb at the meat dept (or you can even get them free when they have the buy veggies get meat free deals).

It will be nice when you have the time to come to Portsmoth again for a monthly or bi-monthly big trip!!!!

This week we've purchased:
BBQ turkey (or chicken? can't remember)
Buffalo turkey (or chicken? can't remember)
Oven Roasted turkey
Maple and Brown Sugar Ham

These were all inspirations brand, which we all have LOVED so far and all were either $5.99 or $6.99 and we get 1/4 pound minus $1Q= cheap lunch Smilie

The reason I put this in deals thread, not chat, is to show )you already know probably) that if you have a big list of items to get it would be worth the drive to NH to get the lower prices if you live in a reasonable distance in Maine, from NH. The deli and meats alone would be worth the savings.

We also watch for whatever deli meat is on sale that week and if we like it we get enough for quite a few days.

I dont know if it is deli turkey in general or not but I have noticed the prices at MB have gotten very high even at MB for their own brand. I asked DH if it was my imagination and he said no.

Actually, the distribution center for Hannaford is in ME and the one for nonperishables for Shaw's is in ME; of course, perishables for Shaw's is in MA. Though, Hannaford also has a distribution center in NY. I think Walmart is more aggressive with groceries in ME than in MA (at least in my area) which offsets somewhat the lack of MB at least in quite a few areas, but lack of MB does play a role. MB has a lot of their stores center around their distribution center while you see other stores having longer hauls to get to their store. Though, I think the largest factor in their price perception is that they focus on featuring store brands more. It is what TJ's is doing too; just that their store brand is more upscale than other store brands. When people buy store brands more often, that's more profit for the store which they can reinvest into offering lower prices to drive traffic in the store since profit margins are better on store brands than name brands.

But the interesting thing is Waltham MA Hannaford is 15 minutes from Burlington MA Market Basket and that one charges ME pricing. There's other Hannafords that are about 15 minutes from a MB that are even cheaper than my store (they're about 45 minutes from me) and only otherwise gets competition from BJ's and Shaw's although there's a Walmart Supercenter in that area. They get some fish sales $1 lower/lb than we do, many regular produce prices is at the sale prices in our ad (and typically they get a small reduction when it goes on sale or the price stays the same). For example, their 2 lb baby carrots are always $1.99 and its $2.49 at my store and goes on sale at $1.99. Their Eastern peach sale this week is $.89; regular is $.99 and its $.99 with a regular of $1.29 at my store.

I think the other thing too is that a lot of ME stores are highly seasonal. Even in Bar Harbor ME by Acadia National Park, the traffic going through the Hannaford up there is a lot higher in the heart of tourist season (like now) than going during a secondary time like the week before Labor Day; I couldn't imagine how little business they do between Labor Day and Memorial Day. And there's probably a lot more examples that could be pointed to in ME.
