A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

12,438 1,117 April 23, 2010 at 06:49 PM
One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

Tired of horror movies that are uninteresting and not scary or are lame-o boring torture porn just trying to throw a lot of blood around? Here you go.

Warning: adult content. Wink

Cabin In The Woods 9/10

Awesome movie. Don't read anything about it, just watch it. Sister gave away the ending but I still enjoyed it.

Started out with an interesting premise; the reveal, however, was a big letdown for me.

The Help - impeccable movie. Well acted all the way around and yeah it may be 2½ movie but it doesn't feel like that once you start getting into it. Is not a movie for those that do not like the portrayal of racism, indignity, and harsh social environments. Wonderful period piece though. Thumbsup

Got to see a sneak peek of Taken 2 last night. As an action movie it's horrible. The plot is ridiculous, everything the character's do is illogical, and during the hand to hand fight scenes the camera cuts happen so fast you can't tell what's going on.

If you go into it looking at it as an action movie parody it's hilarious. The whole theater was laughing a lot during the last 3/4ths of the movie. Glad I got to see it for free.

Resident Evil: Retribution - watched this last night and it's only 95 minutes and I actually liked it more than Afterlife. A couple of more video game characters are added and one re-introduced and I think it sets up for a good follow up movie. They usually keep the budget sensible so it always turns a profit so hopefully another one is in store as it honestly is a decent popcorn movie, nothing more.

Frankenweenie def not for the little ones... or if you have recently lost a dear pet....it is Tim Burton after all...always great effects..but story kinda fell apart and the characters not developed enough...and some very stereotypical situations..

All in all save your cash... 5.5 for story line...10 for effects and total creep factor!

I finally got to watch The Raid: Redemption last night and had a blast (I guess it would have really been Saturday night though).
So disappointed that I missed it in theaters. For a while, the only place showing it near me was a couple hours away in a different state, but they ended up getting a decent selection of SC theaters when it spread to other markets. A buddy I wanted to go see it with was TDY to the AOR at the time though, so I told him I would wait the three weeks until he got back.
Of course by the time he got back, it had vanished from theaters.
Then I wanted to rent it the day it came out and watch it that night, which was the night before I left the country. Went to Blockbuster less than half an hour after they opened and they had only gotten one DVD in, no Blu Rays. And it just so happened that it had been rented already.

So I got a copy in the mail from Amazon early last week and finally got a night off this weekend and put it in. Movie was fantastic.
Pencak Silat is not a martial art I am too familiar with seeing and it was cool to see. There were some moments in a couple fights where I was on the edge of my seat exclaiming "DAMN! and "HOLY -!" I initially planned on watching it with the original soundtrack too, but for kicks started watching it with the Mike Shinoda/Joe Trapanese music and it was done surprisingly well. The story was pretty basic and didn't have much going for it, but the fights more than made up for it.

I would have to say my only complaint was that the default language was English, so I had to stop the movie, go in and change the audio options, and then restart it. And that is a really minor issue though. I usually check the audio options first, but was surprised it was defaulted to English and not Indonesian.

Anyway, the movie was great and I loved it. On my next day off, I will be watching it again with either the original score or with commentary on. I highly recommend it to any martial arts fan, foreign film fan, or general action fan.

Recently watched The Mummy (1932) and The Three Amigos (1986). Given the title, I expected more Mummy goodness in The Mummy. Still, the film holds up and deserves its designation as a classic.

Didn't have much expectation and was pleasantly surprised. Elizabeth Banks and Michelle Pfeiffer put in great performances. ***/****
