Thread Details

Last Edited by slayers750 September 15, 2009 at 01:27 PM
Please no OT.

This will not cover the weekly deals. See the individual threads for each week.

Different types of clearance:

1. The kind with official CVS tags on the shelves. These are usually found in many stores.
2. The kind on an endcap or special table and often have green stickers on them. These are usually specific to that store. Sometimes the discontinued items will show up at other stores with these stickers, too.

Post your finds, with as much info as possible including where you found them (on the shelf or in another place in the store). If you know of any coupons to use on the clearance items, post those too.

Different types of clearance:
1. The kind with official CVS tags on the shelves. These are usually found in many stores. Here's great detail from CVS-er here: (Please rep, this is good info to have!)

CVS has 5 stages that their clearance products go through. Four of these stages are marked by 4 seperate tags, which are the yellow tags that say CLEARANCE on them. A store may hit all 5 stages, or skip ahead to any of the further stages at any time. This decision is usually up to the store manager. Also, sometimes the item may skip ahead stages (aka get marked down further) but the staff hasn't had a chance to put out the tag reflecting the latest stage yet. (This happens at my store a lot, because we are very busy & understaffed.) The 5 stages are:

STAGE 1 - yellow tag that simply reads "CLEARANCE" (item is still full price, the tag is just alerting you that the item is being discontinued. For you guys, its an alert to keep an eye on this item as it reaches the further markdown stages)
STAGE 2 - yellow tag that reads "CLEARANCE 25% OFF - YOU PAY $X.XX" (item is now 25% off original price)
STAGE 3 - yellow tag that reads "CLEARANCE 50% OFF - YOU PAY $X.XX" (item is now 50% off original price)
STAGE 4 - yellow tag that reads "CLEARANCE 75% OFF - YOU PAY $X.XX" (item is now 75% off original price
STAGE 5 - items removed from shelf and placed in the designated general clearance area (item is now 90% off original price)[/

I actually find that clearance at CVS can be highly YMMV. Yeah, eventually everything goes down, but when a store does that can vary wildly...by weeks, even.

My store right now has the HE Tousle Me Softly shampoo for 75% off. The matching conditioner? 50% per the scanner. And yet the conditioner has been reported elsewhere at 75% off just a few posts up. Clearance Pantene stylers have been reported at 75% here, but my store has them at 50% per the scanner.

I definitely agree that scanning everything is important, as clearance tags aren't a big priority for stores...the price at the scanner can certainly be different.
Hmm, that's interesting. Maybe it's partially a regional thing because in all of my CVS clearance purchases I've never seen a different clearance % from store-store. Ive seen varying prices on sections of particular items (like Candy/paperware) but when it comes to a single clearance item at a given % off it's always spot-on.

CVS clearance deals are very rarely YMMV. I buy clearance stuff quite often from several different CVS stores in different areas, and 99% off the time if 1 store has an item at X price the others will be the same. Don't pay any attention to the little clearance % tags in front of the items, often times the employees are either late in changing them, or just miss the item all together. For example, they recently had a nice little Kodak Camcorder that took a few weeks to work it's way up to 75% off. When it finally hit 75% every CVS I went to had it for the same price, even though many still had 50% tags up.

And just a little info as to how their clearance works. They usually start at just 25% off a given item, then every week (usually Monday) it will move up another 25% until it hits 75% off. Once at 75% it will sit for a couple of weeks before they send it back and it then gets Wholesaled off. I actually have a store near me that gets CVS and Rite aid Clearance/discontinued items by the Pallet and it's always funny to see things I purchased at 75% off turn up on their shelves for double that.

Also, their policy for any/all clearance items is all sales final...no returns or exchanges regardless of your reason.

Reps are back...for now. Stick Out Tongue I owe loads of gratitude to everyone that got me where I am! Read the *NEW* CVS FAQ and post your questions there. Let's keep the deal threads deal-related, please.
Would it kill you to read the wiki? Or to read the thread? All the experts got to where they are by reading...you can too.

One of 5 stores at 75% off. One store at 50% off checked, they are not supposed to go to 75% off until 'sometime later this week'.

Got one microwave, two camcorders and a TON of other stuff.

I was told that my fav store wouldn't go 75% until 1/6. It will stay for a few days and then be boxed up and sent to the consignor to be resold/trashed. No 90% off this year. Every district is different.
