"Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends (life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness), it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, & to institute new government." -Thomas Jefferson
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. It is its natural manure." -Thomas Jefferson
Once you have your own place that allows pets, by all means get a cat. While you are living with your father and are thinking about getting something that requires years of commitment, listen to your father.
Cats are less work than dogs but they are work and require your time, attention and money. You have to clean their litter box daily, deal with disposing of the waste, clean up their sick/hairballs off the floor, furniture, bed, etc., brush them, clip their nails and take them once a year for vet checkups. It's not cheap to own a cat either once you factor in the food, treats, litter, toys and vet bills. Plus if you work outside the home, it's best to get two cats so they can keep each other company.
Kittens are even more work as they have boundless energy and they like to explore and chew on things so you have to train them and safety proof your house.
Think long and hard about all of this then decide if a cat is really right for you.
"Happiness and depression are both feelings, just like joy and anger. It's not feelings that give us problems. It's what we do with them that makes the difference."
"When I was 5 years old, my mom always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down happy. They told me I didn't understand the assignment and I told them they didn't understand life."
I've had lots of pets in my lifetime. Only once did I have to turn a pet over to my parents. My dad was all pissy with me at the time - he didn't want to have to deal with my problem...blah blah...whatever, but I promised to take it back as soon as possible.
He took the kitten anyway and when I tried to take the kitty back, my father said, "He's mine now. Get your own cat."
