Thread Details

The PUBLIX thread is IMHO the best grocery store thread around heart
Here's a little chat area for us all to share info, recipes, rant's, raves and whatever else we want without clogging up the regular weekly deals thread for PUBLIX. If we want to share super deals we find in other stores or whatnot that's ok too heart

I think we all are such a great family that it's a good to have our own special place Grouphug

You can post basically anything you like in here but let's keep deals info in the actual PUBLIX thread. All are welcome and basically no major rules except be kind and courteous of other's and treat each other with respect. Other than that let's all have some fun! Also you don't have to shop at PUBLIX to share in the chat or whatnot... we like everyone.

That's what she said -with great disappointment Wink

Sorry JD I know I know it is G-Rated!
But someone ( N names) did say something VERY similar to this in the WAGS thread recently, so I thought I could get away with it here Wink

You know I have never been to your house. But I am thinking there is a floor to ceiling pole somewhere within the interior!! Wink John is one lucky guy!!! I know if a post is going to go PG-13 or worse, either you wrote it or were involved!! laugh out loud

I must be the only person on SD who didn't buy $1.50 Qs from KFR. Redplum is so iffy to print for me, so I didn't want to risk my points and then have a big ole goose egg to show for it (when it didn't print)
I know I'm in the wrong thread & this is the wrong post to quote, but I'm too sick to care LMAO

Just got back from a ST and there were those little bags of AF coffee hanging on pegs above the big bags. I don't know if this is new or not b/c I haven't looked previously. Since I saw your post, I looked Smilie

Must just be not at my ST. I've looked, but have plans tonight to use the $10 GC Q at the regular Target a little farther out. Fingers crossed.

ETA: You can search at Target.com for Archer Farms Coffee and then sort by price. Several of my stores show every flavor of the little bags of AF Coffee as "not sold at this store". Only one local store has limited availability (very little... I was there by chance last night).

For those are you far more inclined to not screw up things in the kitchen, I need advice. I want to make peppermint bark to take into work Monday and I was thinking it might be a good time to use up some of the random molds I've bought at Target at 90% off. I have a donut mold and I was thinking I could use it to make peppermint bark "wreaths", but I'm not sure if that's a good idea? Will the chocolate get stuff? Will it look stupid and not at cute as I picture in my head?

Oh. And non-food related. Does anyone know who sells the TV Guide magazine? I looked at Target and Publix and didn't see it. Doctor Who is on the cover Embarrassment

I almost forgot - does anyone have suggestions where I can get cheaper print supplies? My printer is out of toner and each cartridge is about $50 retail. There's alot of good printables right now I feel I'm missing.

What printer do you have?

Meritline or Amazon for my needs...

I use Amazon also. HP was over $50 and the one I bought (generic) was $15. I'm on 2nd ream of paper and still going strong.

Can I just say how much I hate sleepovers! Connor turns 9 on Monday and he wanted his 3 best buddies to go roller skating, eat pizza, and spend the night. By 5 pm my nerves were shot. By 5:30 they broke the garage door. Somehow someone ripped the inside metal parts off the inside of the door. Is it 10:00 am on Sunday yet? One little boy is so sweet and quiet. The other 3 (including mine) are so loud.

With real pieces of peppermint, or some kinda peppermint oil? Real white chocolate or candiquik or ??

From experience, do not crush your peppermint candies in the blender (a rolling pin and whack, whack does just fine). When the blender jar breaks from the peppermints flying, you'll have peppermint dust that you'll be cleaning up for weeks.

I've made it with Candiquik (confectioner's coating) and real peppermint candies. If it's oil, it may make the chocolate seize.

Uhm, I have Nestle chocolate chips. So what are those?

My original plan to use the donut mold was to put crushed candy canes on the bottom and then layer white & dark chocolate. Not possible?

I'll just be ticked if I screw up and waste all this chocolate laugh out loud

that's probably semi-sweet chocolate. Make one set (ie, don't melt too much of either set and try it). If it doesn't work, then try something else.

The peppermint need to set into something (ie, they have to stick to the chocolate, or all they will do is crumble off). You could also mix the peppermint into the white chocolate and then add the dark once the white is cooled. (I'm not the chef... Bean and cawoodkid are your women for this type of stuff) but I've definitely played with it in the past (but with confectioners coating... same stuff chocolate covered pretzels are normally done in).

Do you have any parafin wax? The morsels may not set up like confectioners coating does (I found this out when I made oreo balls at Thanksgiving).

I had written in the Publix thread that my store wouldn't accept the $10 Target giftcard wyb $50 coupon. I printed off the Publix coupon rules and headed back to the store this morning. The manager I spoke with said he was trying to get clarification - I gave him the policy and he gave me the Publix giftcard. Smilie I went back this evening to do one more transaction and easily got it this time. So glad they are so great about this sort of thing as I just can't force myself to shop at Target! I did go to do a deal there today...and laughed when the cashier told me that he had to get a supervisor to ok my coupon usage because, "people are trying to get stuff for free." laugh out loud You don't say! I personally wouldn't try this. I searched thru my Cook's Illus. books and found this one that is really simple and (hopefully) you have some pistachios. I love the Cook's recipes. Have used about 500 different ones since retiring and could count on one hand the ones that were not 'keepers'.

Here's an alternative that is much simpler and I think will yield better results:

Wintermint Bark

1 lb. white chocolate, chopped into rough chunks (I don't see why you can't substitute the white chocolate chips).

l cup shelled unsalted pistachios

1/4 cup crushed peppermint candies

1. Make foil sling for 8 inch square baking pan. (Fold two long sheets of aluminum foil so that each measures 8 inches wide. Lay the folded sheets in the pan perpendicular to each other with the extra foil handing over the edges of the pan. Gently push the foil into the corners and up the sides of the pan with your fingers, smoothing the foil flush to the pan.) I spray this also with Pam.

2. Heat chocolate in heatproof bowl set over saucepan one-quarter filled with barely simmering water, stirring occasionally until melted. Add pistachios and stir until well coated with melted chocolate. Using rubber spatula, scrape chocolate-pistacio mixture into prepared pan and smooth top. Evenly sprinkle (crushed) peppermint candies on top of chocolate-pistachio mixture and refrigerate until firm, about 1 hour.

3. Using foil overhand, lift bark out of pan. Gently peel away foil and discard. Using chef's knife, cut bark into rough chunks before serving.

Follow tn_native's advise for crushing the peppermint.

Why This recipe works:

"We typically stay away from preparing candy at home--outside of the occasional batch of simple fudge or decadent chocolate truffles. The reason for this is that most candy recipes that we are familiar with are just too fussy (all call for the use of a sugar syrup and a candy thermometer) and time-consuming...We found that the key to creating a great candy is to balance the sweet elements with salty elements . Textured contrast and a good deal of crunch are important too...this bark not only tastes the part, but also the red and white crushed candy and the green pistachios celebrate the festive colors of the season." I make balls like almond joy bars, peanut butter balls and chocolate covered cherries and you can't beat using parafin wax. (Look for it in canning supplies) Whatever is used, be careful that water doesn't get into the melted choc. or it will 'seize' up.
