Thread Details

Getting married in a couple weeks and have been looking at a trip to Hawaii for our honeymoon. Been looking at the Costco travel site and seen some decent deals on Maui $1800 for 2, includes car + hotel + air or Kauai for $1900. Seems like pretty decent pricing, just wanted some input on what to do and if the pricing is good.

Thanks!

Where are you flying from? How long are you staying? When do you plan on taking the honeymoon trip? What are you willing to deal with in terms of hotel star ratings?

What hotels does that include? How many nights?

I'd be flying from Jacksonville, FL. I entered 4 days, but as i recall an extra day wasnt much more. I believe the hotel was Aston at the Banyan, but I'll have to look again. Oahu is a bit less, might do that instead.

I'd go to Kauai, Maui or the Big Island before I'd go to Oahu. Oahu is nice, but way too many people on that Island!

I've only been to Oahu and always stayed in Waikiki strip. We go there almost every year, and was just there last month. Some co-workers that's been to Kauai and Big Island, they said it's less crowded but if you're a younger couple and wants to have fun, Waikiki is the best place for you and your future wife. Since you're leaving in two weeks, you will get a better deal in hotels. I went to priceline.com and chose 3.5 and up stars. We got a room in Marriott Resort and Spa for $99 a night (regular rate $400+). I travel a lot and haven't tried the package deal. I always end up saving more if I book it separate.

For airfare, go to airfarewatchdog.com and you will be notified for unadvertised deals. And if you stay on the strip, you don't need a rental car if it's your first time. It's cheaper and more convenient to book your activities there. TIP: Don't fall for those people offering discounted ticket on the street, it's 90% timeshare. And you'll need to attend their presentation to get the freebie or discounted tour rate. Waste of time.

Good Luck!

I gotta agree with Maui or Kauai. Unless you are looking to go clubbing, do a lot of shopping with Japanese tourists, pick up some blow or a hooker I'd steer clear of Waikiki given the choice. It's not that Waikiki sucks or anything, it's just that Maui is so much nicer, and I've heard that Kauai is even more mellow. Going there later in the year so I can't say yet but seems a lot more chill. There is some night life on Maui but it doesn't compare to Waikiki that has actual clubs so if that's what you want keep that in mind. Do honeymooners go clubbing though?

Waikiki beach itself IMO kinda sucks. Living for so long in Santa Monica I guess I just expected it to be a much larger beach. Waikiki is basically a narrow strip of sand (like narrower than you'd really ever expect) with a ton of people on it in front of the hotels. It's kinda cool, but way smaller than I thought it was which kind of made it less relaxing because it was crowded.

In all, and depending on when you are going, that doesn't sound like a bad deal. Hell, two flights alone from LAX to Maui right now will run you $1,400 so $1,900 is a good deal from back east. Back in December though it was only $500 for two so as always timing will dictate whether it's a good deal or not. I did look at it once a while back and found it was cheaper to book on my own but with airfare now it's a better deal.

I just gotta ask though. Why only 4 days???????? For what is probably a 10-12 hr flight why wouldn't you stay atleast a week? The wife and I just went to the Big Island for a week for our honeymoon and really wished we stayed longer which is why we're going back. The Big Island was nice but personally preferred Maui over it. There is a lot to do on the BI, just that there really aren't many beaches so everyone goes to the few that there are.

My favorite island by far is Maui. I've been to Kauai and it was just a little too slow for me. Oahu was fine once I got out of Honolulu. I enjoyed Kailua bay, but unfortunately hotels are mostly located in Waikiki. I felt like I was in San Diego not Hawaii.

I just returned from my trip to Maui and again it was perfect as usual. There is a great abundance to do with just the right amount of nightlife (no clubs but bars).

With such a long flight you should really consider a longer stay and you will be glad that you did.

I know... 4 days seems pretty short for the amount of time were going to spend flying. Between the wedding and honeymoon, I can only take so many paid days off. I've also considered other destinations, but the pricing was similar.

Since its a short stay, im just looking to relax. Sounds like Maui is what im looking for. Are there lots of good places to eat in Maui?

I appreciate all your responses. I've got a long list of things to finish before the wedding, and this basically crosses our honeymoon off the list.

Yes there are a lot of places to eat on Maui.

Some of my favorites are:
David Paul's Island Grill
I'O
Merriman's
Hula Grill Barefoot Bar
The Plantation House
Sansei Sushi (especially during their happy hour).

Make sure you rent a car (yes you will need one) as soon as possible. They are low on stock since the car rental companies shipped many off the islands when the economy tanked.

Some things to do while you're in Maui:

Road to Hana
Iao Needle
Ziplining
Haleakala Crater

Congrats!

Good info guys, we're going to maui in about a month as well. On orbitz right now you can get a nice 4 star hotel with roundtrip flight for 2 people out of LAX for about $2,400 total (for 8-9 nights stay). Seems like a pretty good deal.

What's the best place to go for a rental car in Maui?

Are there any current Orbitz coupon codes out there?

All the majors are on Maui. You can try www.costcotravel.com and www.discounthawaiicarrental.com

Definitely do it now and keep checking as you get closer to your date.
