Turn American Express/AMEX Reward Cards into Cash

Bondgamer 550 195 May 8, 2011 at 08:28 AM
Several rebate processors are now in bed with AMEX in giving out reward cards which are a pain to use and can not simply be deposited at your local bank. The rebate terms said I could bring it to a bank to deposit but that was not even true! If you don't use the cards for 6 months they start charging you $2 a month and you have to know the exact amount every time you use it. These things are designed to discourage their use.

If you want the cash you have to go through an extra step. When you get the card(s) call the phone number on the back (1-800-297-7327). You have to input the card number and security code. From the options, select 5 (more options) and then 0 to speak with someone.

You must say the magic phrase "I got this card from doing a rebate, I would like to request a check be sent to me". If you mention the word cash anywhere you will likely be denied unless the CSR is already familiar with this process. If they say they can't do it, then you need to convince them otherwise because they can. Tell them it said you could do this when you filled out the rebate form.

If you have multiple cards they can all be combined into one check. They will give you a confirmation number you should write down in case the check never arrives. The check will arrive within 20 business days.

You can also get the refund deposited via ACH in 15 business days rather than waiting 20 days for a check.

ACH transfer is also possible to request

1-800-297-7327
enter card # followed by #
enter 4 digit security code on front of card followed by #
when message starts, press 5, then 0

Does it matter if I have bought this software individually for rebates? Can I still do this rebate? Example I bought thew Acronis with Nuance a couple weeks back?

I have about 30 of these Amex rebate cards I want to cash out. Has anyone tried cashing out a lot of cards? Will you be red flagged if you do too many?

That should be fine. TDMVP73 does/did large batches like that. It is going to take forever though and they may ask you to fax them in rather than doing it over the phone if they're busy.

I generally don't do more than 10 at a time mostly because of the length of the calls and the consequence of getting disconnected -- it happens on occasion and you cannot pick up where you left off. Though, they seem to have made improvements -- the calls are much shorter and they no longer try to talk me out of it.

I couldn't find the Amazon Payments thread but for those of you who use Amazon Payments to cash out your Amex Rebate cards, how long does it take for the $1 pre-auth to drop off of the card?

I thought you could avoid the preauth by entering the wrong expiration date at first and fixing it before using it.

Oh is that true? I thought I read that a long time ago, but I wasn't sure if it was fixed.

I will not accept these cards anymore, period. I had a rebate from a purchase at New Egg for a $20 card. When the card never arrived, I contacted customer support.

Customer support said they would send me another card, but to "replace a card" was a charge of $6.95! This was on a $20 card that I never received from them to begin with.

For the most part, I'm getting away from rebates anyway. They're a pain the the behind, I've had them take over three months to arrive, some never arrived and now this.

These cards included, it's all a scam to keep people from receiving or using the rebate.
Well sorry, you're not scamming me anymore. You can scam someone else. It's Sale price or no deal. wave

It's silly to call it a scam.
I've got boxes upon boxes of free stuff from rebates, and EARNED MONEY in the process. Just because you had a bad experience with a single rebate card is not a reason to call the entire rebate process a scam. Doing so is incredibly narrow minded.

Well, I finally got around to getting a BlueBird card at Walmart tonight. Then I get home and get all the way through registration and it tells me that I am not able to because I already have a Serve account! WTF! Nowhere does it say that. Now I have a BlueBird card with $10 on it and no way to register it. Any suggestions?

You're going to need to cancel either your Serve account or your Bluebird account. Amex won't let you have both.

Wow, this thread turned out to be popular. I had forgotten all about posting it.

Took my own advice and redeemed two of the $300 printer AMEX rebate cards.

Fun fact: I don''t see any reps in my history for this thread.

You can't give rep in the rebate forum.
