Not a hot deal, but these warning/heads-up threads deserve high visibility:

It hasn't been made official yet but it seems Verizon has finally made the decision to ration their data plans, so if you want to lock in an unlimited data plan you need to sign up no later than July 6th.

**2ND UPDATE 6/25/2011**

It seems if you upgrade 7/7 or later from a feature/dumbphone to a smartphone you will lose any unlimited data that you have and be forced into tiers.

**UPDATE 6/24/2011**

Follow this link to see photos of the memo:
http://www.androidcentral.com/ver...ete-detail

Verizon indirect retailer e-mail
As of this morning we have been given the green light to start training on the data changes Verizon Wireless is making effective 7/7/11.
$29.99 unlimited data will be discontinued effective 7/7/11
  • EXISTING CUSTOMERS- That have our $29.99 unlimited data plan WILL BE GRANDFATHERED IN, they will keep their unlimited plan after 7/7/11
  • EXISTING CUSTOMERS- That current have the unlimited data WILL BE ABLE TO UPGRADE AND KEEP the unlimited data feature (No known end date on this as of this moment)
  • EXISTING CUSTOMERS- That add lines post 7/7/2011, will NOT be able to choose the $29.99 unlimited data feature
  • NEW CUSTOMERS- Any customer that sets up service from now, until 7/7/2011 WILL BE ON, AND WILL BE GRANDFATHERED into our $29.99 unlimited data package
  • NEW CUSTOMERS- Any new customer that set up service AFTER 7/7/2011, WILL NOT be able to choose the $29.99 unlimited plan
  • BUSINESS DISCOUNTS- Currently our business discounts apply to the $29.99 data plan on the primary line only. Most discounts are 20% despite whatever monthly access discount they have
  • BUSINESS DISCOUNTS- After 7/7/2011 data discounts will only apply to the $50 and higher data packages on the primary line.
  • Discount break down ex. of customers with a 20% feature discount on their primary line. ($50-20%=$40/month for 5GB and includes the business e-mail feature)
  • -- ($20/GB vs. $40/GB+ Business e-mail )
New data pricing for smart phones is as follows:
  • $30 for 2GB with $10/GB overage
  • $50 for 5GB (this also includes business e-mail at no additional charge) with $10/GB overage
  • $80 for 10GB (this also includes business e-mail at no additional charge) with $10/GB overage
So all changes effective July 7th, 2011.
Existing customer KEEP their $29.99 unlimited data plan
If an existing customer upgrades from a feature phone to a smart phone after 7/7/11, they will NOT be able to add on the unlimited data package. They must choose from the new data plans. (My (elnino2783) personal interpretation - I think they mean if you don't already have the data plan. Meaning the data plan will be new after 7/7/11)
Anyone who sets up new service with unlimited data, upgrades from a feature phone to a smart phone with unlimited data, or customer currently on the $29.99 before July, 7, 2011 will be grandfathered in.
These changes also apply to employee plans as well (personal accounts w/work discounts applied)
SO, This is a huge time for us to set our customers up with the right package for them! We only have 14 DAYS remaining for unlimited data, and until the new data pricing takes effect. (14 days to setup new customers w/unlimited data, and customers upgrading from a feature phone to a smart phone)
PLEASE, PLEASE make sure we take advantage of this heads up and get our heavy data users set up on these unlimited plans before they change.
Please call, text or e-mail me any questions or concerns you might have.

**END UPDATE**

Current pricing is $30-$40 (depending on what you have currently, I don't know the specifics of having $30) for unlimited

New pricing tiers will be

2GB – $30/month
5GB – $50/month
10GB – $80/month

Tethering plans will be:

4GB – $50/month
7GB – $70/month
12GB – $100/month

$10/GB when you go over your allotted data

So far the rumors are saying those who get unlimited data before July 7th will have it for life (or at least an extended period even while upgrading), which is really good when apps with video streaming like Netflix are becoming more prevalent

NEW 3G to 4G post-7/7 upgrade information: https://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=40611143&postcount=625

You will keep the unlimited plan when upgrading to 4G - http://www.droid-life.com/2011/06...ited-data/

For everybody asking, don't count on the Bionic as it's still getting revisions:

Blackberry users! According to @VZWSupport on Twitter:

Existing Smartphone(Blackberry) custs can keep unlimited data pricing when renewing or upgrading to another Smartphone. ^YK

I just got back from a Verizon store. I spoke with a rep that spent several years working at a data center and knows his stuff. He said that the 611 phone reps are wrong regarding non smartphone data and smartphone data packages. The data package that is on non-smart phones like the envy3 are coded differently in their system from the unlimited smartphone plan, and the two plans are different plans. You have to activate a 3g or 4g smartphone now before the cut off to keep unlimited data. It doesn't matter however if the smartphone is 3g or 4g.

**********************************************************************************************************
Ask for $9.99 off data per line per month. Deal extended to 7/31/11
For family share, must be on at least 1400 min + unlimited txt plan to qualify for $9.99 off data/month.
For single lines, you must be on at least the 450 min + unlimited txt plan ($60/month).

Does Verizon have a non-contract option? As in, can you start service with them on a current plan without signing a contract if you bring your own Verizon phone to activate? The reason I'm asking is basically if you want to try to "lock in" the current plan but don't want to buy a new phone just yet. It'd suck to have to sign up with them right now, buy a phone from the current selection you aren't really hot on, and then see them release a phone in the fall or winter that you want. I know someone who'd be looking to switch to them but doesn't like any of the current phones. They'd want to buy a so-so phone off contract on eBay or CL or something, bring it in, begin service with it with current plan options, then buy a better phone whenever it comes out with their new customer pricing (basically, "save" the new phone upgrade purchase option).

i never understand these comments pertaining to the problem of signing a contract...
do you people really jump from cell company to company?

lets leave the price difference aside between say VZ/ATT and TM, cause there are more factors than just price... TM/ATT coverage anywhere around me in simply horrible, so i need to go with VZ.

so what exactly is the 'fear' or 'issue' with signing a contract for 2 years?
i've had my family line setup with VZ for 10-12 years now... and have no intention of ever switching.
do people just from carrier to carrier for certain phones or something?

it's a serious question, i'm not trying to be a douche.
i just don't get it.

only other reason could be that they sometimes need a cellphone and sometimes don't? frequent international travelers? but that's what prepaid plans are for.

Does anyone know if you already have an account with 3G data if you will remain locked-in when upgrading to a 4G phone??

"Great deal"

I said to the hot verizon girl.

But in my head:

"I have $30 for 500 min voice + unlimited data for years. Stupid verizon."

I was a loyal vzw fan for 10 years, but as smart phones started to hit the market I wanted to check them out. I upgraded. Soon after I regretted that decision. I had a corp discount of 15% per month and my monthly bill was still over $100 due to excessive "fees" that I knew were bogus. I then paid my early termination and got the straight talk/iphone deal....Now I pay $50 with tax (zero fee's) for unlimited everything...yes service is not as good, but I'm saving close to $1k dollars over the course of two years....VZW can go to hell with their overpriced service.

I know this all speculation, but if I already have the unlimited plan and want to upgrade when, say iPhone 5 comes out, will I still be able to keep my plan?

According to memos, yes

I won't guarantee it, but it looks promising
