Mini USB Charge-Only Cable

PitCritter 401 84 September 13, 2011 at 06:07 AM
I'm looking for a USB cable. Unfortunately, it's not that simple. I want to power my GPS from the USB port of my Sync system in my Ford truck. When I use a standard cable, the GPS goes into data transfer mode when I plug it in.

I'm told that there are cables out there that have only the power pins connected, not the data pins.

Does anybody know where I might find one? I need a standard to mini cable.

If I'm being picky, shorter is better.

That's NOT what she said!Big Grin

4-6 inches would be ideal.

Thanks for reading this and for any suggestions.

I guess you have a Garmin?

I haven't found a sure fire place to buy these cables other than the garmin package it self.

Actually, I have a Generic Chinese unit that runs iGo software.

Maybe I'll look at Garmin.

the USB connection is 4 wires - 2 for power (5V) and 2 for data.

I guess if you wanted to go the cheap & easy route, block and/or cut the data wires (or connectors).

If it were me, I would try and cut out or block (tape off) the middle leads in the larger (A) USB jack.

Also, as a side note I have a similar issue with my MINI which has a built in USB port for data/ipod connection.

You have to short pins 4 and 5.

a lot of smartphones support/require this now. and I'm guessing it's needed for GPS devices so it can both be used and charged at the same time.

That's one source, but it seems really expensive for a gimped usb cable

Get a cigarette lighter plug USB charger and you can use the same cable to power the GPS and leave that USB port on the sync system free for something else.

That's my current setup, but there's one minor inconvenience. The lighter outlet is constant power. The USB is switched with the ignition. I like the unit to power down when I turn off the truck.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll keep looking.
