Anyone just see the story about people on Government Assistance and free food?

They just did a story on SUNDAY MORNING, (NY show) about how dire the situation is...... this time in GA. The had a military family that "is unable to work" for some reason..... anyway, they show them crying and talking about how she's preg (the best time to have a kid is when neither of you work right?)... anyway. They were pulling up to get free "Thanksgiving" food..

In a nice new TAHOE LIMITED!!

My friends who work couldn't afford one of those and they have good jobs! WTF.

Anyway, as they are filming the cars who are in line for free turkeys and food.....you don't see ONE JUNKY Car, they are all newish, Saab's, volvo's......etc.

Makes me sick!!!

Is there a forum here where we can all talk about how to get free govt assistance and still own a house, three cars and 2 boats?

I hope you kept the boat with the kitchen and didn't have to lay off your chef.

Sunday Morning on CBS? Yeah, I was watching that shit. The toaster story had like no farking puns. Get it together, Bill Geist.

edit: the guy who OP is talking about has severe PTSD and his wife is 9 months pregnant. I know it looks wrong for them to be riding around in SUV and shit but homies gotta eat.

Dontknow I see it a lot. Maybe they bought the car when they were in a more sound financial state, but now they need the car to be able to get around. Why's it matter? Either they're needy, or they aren't.

I was at the grocery store the other day behind someone who had two carts full of food. She paid for $300 of it in food stamps. I saw her again in the parking lot getting into a late model, foreign SUV. I must hand it to her at least, she was actually buying groceries that were nutrient rich and stuff, not the crap I see some people buying with their food stamps.

Iagree This recession is taking its toll on (almost) all kinds of people. People often find themselves exhausting their savings because of rampant discrimination against those without a job.

Do people think that cars and other stuff just automagically goes away when you lose your job? Doesn't it make sense, in an environment where employers determine your employability by credit score, that you do what you can to keep it intact?

I'm a little upset if 300 dollars worth of my tax dollars go to someone who has a late model SUV.....

Just like these people.....they shouldn't be getting a free turkey if they can afford to drive around a GMC yukon limited.....that like a minimum 45k car. Sell the luxury suv and buy yourself a turkey.

I think if I had a car worth $30,000 I'd sell it and pay cash for a cheaper one before I would swallow my pride and go on public assistance. That's just me though, and I do realize that it's not always easy to sell a car.

Ah, shortsighted, can only see your own rage. Gotcha.

But that's the thing. Cars (especially GMs...) often go underwater. Maybe they rolled a previous loan in because they couldn't afford to maintain the car they had (too many problems, would have eaten into their savings). There's a lot of reasons why one can't get rid of a car that doesn't make them an evil, greedy person like the OP presents.

They're people. Show a little compassion, understanding and imagination people! This could be you!

Yeah, it's disgusting, but it's not much worse than the yuppies who go on the news and cry poverty because they got fired from a 500K job and the new one pays only 250K.

These people are always screaming that people shouldn't be relying on government handouts, yet when they can get it for themselves, all bets are off.

And this is why a lot of people who REALLY need help can't get it. They need to crack down on all of these fraudsters.
