Urgent Help Needed - Size Limit for SFX's (self extracting archives)?

discoverEdeals 805 29 December 22, 2011 at 07:04 PM
Hey guys,

Is there a limit on self-extracting archives in winRar? I have about 15gb of data I need to create a SFX for, it's pretty urgent.

TIA, and happy holidays.

As far as I'm aware, there isn't a limitation on size of RAR SFX files; however if your computer is formatted in FAT32 and not NTFS, you will be limited to a file size of 2GB; but WinRAR is smart enough to split the archive into 2gb chunks for you.

Also, I'm hoping you have a large flash drive or portable hard drive to put that on; that's not going to fit on a DVD-R and would take quite a long time to transfer over the internet...

Create a multi-volume RAR and you can specify the size of each volume. You can then use WinRAR to crease an SFX file from the first RAR and it will combine all of those volumes together into a singular SFX in order to extract.

4gb is the limit for an exe, just split it in to small archives

There's no limit for the compression in WinRAR, but your hard drive's might only take 4GB at a time.

It's best if you split your archive into 4GB segments.

You can create .rar files that exceeds 4GB, that I am sure of.

But for .exe executable, then probably you're right. Split the file(s) into a bit less than 4GB worth at a time.
