Absolutely, positively loved this book. So did my father when I bought him his own copy. The author depicts events with an astounding level of detail that must have taken lots of research to get right. Highly recommended and a no brainer at this price.
If you like this book you might also want to check out "Paul Revere's Ride," also by David Hackett Fischer. Events precede those in "Washington's Crossing" and it's also very well reviewed. Haven't gotten a chance to read my copy yet but I'm sure it'll be great.
I read Paul Revere's Ride long ago, and was hugely impressed. Not only did it seem to reflect perhaps five times the work, research and insight per page as the average mass-market history book, but it conveyed five times the love for the subject.
The real trick to history is to step back and look forward- step back into the past and try to see ahead knowing only what they knew, not knowing the outcome of each decision and action. Fischer makes that easy for a time and place that completely changed the world, largely because of people of remarkable principle and courage who saw a dim but persistent vision of a barely-possible future, one that they decided was well worth dying for if need be. They bet their lives against their own government, the greatest empire on Earth, for the sake of that vision.
Learning to see through their eyes, even a little, cannot leave you unmoved or unchanged, and no author does it better.
