Thread Details

Last Edited by godfather927 February 27, 2012 at 11:54 AM
Thread to discuss movies of any type and date, but perhaps with more focus on recent ones in the past couple years.

Please be courteous to others when discussing a fairly recent movie with unexpected plot elements or endings, and always spoiler tag comments that could ruin the story for anyone who hasn't seen the movie yet. When trying to decide whether or not to tag something, please err on the side of caution since even the mention that a certain movie has a twist (without divulging what it is) could end up being a mini-spoiler itself.

In case you don't already know how, you can spoiler tag any block of text with the following tags:

this tag goes at the end of the hidden text ~~~~>
this tag goes at the beginning of the hidden text ~~~~>
Me (white) and my gf (black), went to see Django last week. We both thought it was fantastic, although she did find it a little over the top with the amount of gore Tarantino throws in at the end. Waltz delivers an excellent performance as expected and I don't think I could see anyone else playing a better Django than Jamie Foxx. She made me watch the Oprah interview with Jamie where they talk about filming. It's actually really interesting describing how they really immersed themselves into their roles and the difficulties for them portraying slaves during the time as well as the guilt the white actors felt portraying slave owners/overseers. Jamie tells an entertaining story about how hard it was for Leo to say the N-word. Did I mention that you get to see a little Kerry Washington boob? There's a quality screener going around, dl it and check out this movie!

Also watched This is 40. What a boring movie. I expected better but oh well. Melissa Mcarthy stole the movie with her 5 minute scene, but the rest was terrible.

I didn't use a spoiler tag because you just seam to take them for granite. But don't worry old chap, I'm hear to help you. For all intensive purposes, your probably relying on spell check a bit to much. But who knows, maybe this post is a blessing in the skies for other people who make similar mistakes, or maybe it's just a mute point and all for not.

Is it OK if I am white and I watch it with my white wife? Or is there some unwritten rule?

Appropriate for all races.

Edit: But probably not appropriate if you're not older than 15.

In all seriousness, I do think it looks good. I'll have to watch it this weekend but I think I will be watching it alone. My wife isn't much for ultra-violent movies - which I have to assume this is.

In parts it's very, very violent, but otherwise it's not too bad. The middle is pretty tame (excluding the "mandingo fight"), but expect gratuitous use of the n-word as well as other related slang.

That's how Knocked Up was to me so sounds like more of the same formula here. Can't wait to see DJ Unchained though.

The Hobbit: The Unexpected Journey - Well I'll give Peter Jackson one thing, he doesn't do half hearted, half rate, or watered down versions of any adaptations of scripts put to film. The Hobbit was no different than King Kong or the LOTR series. It was big, extravagant, rich, delightful, humorous, serious, and awe-inspiring. Did I forget to mention it was really effin long too? I'm sure this was the slimmed down version of the movie at 2 hours and 49 minutes, but damn it didn't feel like it. Loved the visuals, story, and yeah it had its slow parts but so what? He's telling a story so shut up, crunch popcorn, and enjoy it. I've read several forums state how boring it was in comparison to LOTR and its pacing and I'm wondering what the hell they are talking about or what movie they saw. The Orc chase, the escape from Goblinville, the flashbacks of the Dwarf demise, and of course the present day Dwarfs themselves make this well worth watching. I refuse to buy it on Blu-ray though Nono2 until he comes out with all 3 Hobbit movies in extended platinum style. But that's a review for another day.

There is a backstory to that. I can't remember it exactly but he did that on purpose.
