Thread to discuss movies of any type and date, but perhaps with more focus on recent ones in the past couple years.

Please be courteous to others when discussing a fairly recent movie with unexpected plot elements or endings, and always spoiler tag comments that could ruin the story for anyone who hasn't seen the movie yet. When trying to decide whether or not to tag something, please err on the side of caution since even the mention that a certain movie has a twist (without divulging what it is) could end up being a mini-spoiler itself.

In case you don't already know how, you can spoiler tag any block of text with the following tags:

this tag goes at the end of the hidden text ~~~~>[/spoiler]

this tag goes at the beginning of the hidden text ~~~~>[spoiler]

Was a bit slow to build but I enjoyed it. Was a very Romeo Juliet / moulin rouge style.

Saw mud today - wasn't bad but not as good as ppl are saying.

Went and saw The Great Gatsby last night. Really good flick. Pretty artsy, but really pulls you into the story. We watched it in 3D also, and it really added to everything. They used the 3D to bring certain items into focus better so there could be multiple things going on (like at one of his parties) but still you could tell what they wanted you to look towards. Plus it added multiple layers during certain scenes to add to the artistic feel.

I had read the book in HS but couldn't remember much of the story (or any of it...) but when they 1st showed the billboard with the all seeing gaze it slapped me like a ton of bricks, haha.

The sound track was awesome too. EXAMPLE [soundcloud.com] A lot of newer-newish stuff but with a 20's turn to it. At 2.5 hrs it was a touch long for me but the story makes up for it. 4 of 5.
Ehhhh, I wasn't so impressed.

IMO, it didn't really touch on Luhrmann seemed to stray from the notion that but rather made it seem for the majority of the movie (at least to me) that . I mean, everyone has their own experience. That's what I got from it.

Seeing it in regular-D, I could tell which scenes were enhanced for 3D, and they just didn't translate all that well to 2D. Way too busy in 2D, but when you're seeing multiple layers, I know it wouldn't be as busy. I didn't care so much for the soundtrack, either. Seemed like a lot of it was new songs about wealth.. aka, just what new songs are anyway? Dontknow

2 of 5 from me, because it was still entertaining. Maybe I should have left any expectations that Luhrmann would do a book-centric movie at the door laugh out loud

I am normally the type of person that NEVER EVER compares a movie to a book. [Mostly because I never read...but]. You are just ASKING for trouble when doing that. It would be like saying the Eiffel Tower isn't worth a visit because it isn't also a church like Notre Dame. laugh out loud

And I would agree with your spoiler...but I wasn't watching it hoping to get the book played out on film act for act.

Does the book play Daisy as money grubbing? That she could only love someone that was rich?

Really Curtie'd whatever analogy you were going for, there laugh out loud

I mean, I understand what you're saying about you can't expect a word-for-word follow of the book, but when you take on such a literary classic as Gatsby, I think it's fair to expect certain things from the experience (especially on the 6th attempt at depicting the book) laugh out loud

It does, in one way or another. She basically represents money in the book; one edition's preface says, "[Daisy] is for sale.. but [Gatsby] doesn't have the right currency."

I loved oblivion. Toms called jack again and he's getting old man pecs - and sure old red broke out of shawshank and stole Morpheus's shades but it was great and looked stunning.

I can't read and have never read the book. For me it was 3.5/5 - I enjoyed the baz effect on music etc.

Saw 42 over the weekend. I usually stay away from movies that feature racism as a prevalent theme but the racism in this one wasn't as bad as it could've been. Overall, I enjoyed the movie. My father said the real story was far worse than what was portrayed on screen.

I can't even imagine. I know they probably had to really skew it down to make the movie reach a broader audience.
