Android anyone???

626 62 March 6, 2012 at 02:54 PM
Hi All,

I would like to get viewpoints from those who use Android OS. I have been an Apple person but i'm interested in Android. I would like to know if Android will offer me a different or improved user experience or would you say the differences are subtle and just a matter of taste? Basically, I have an iPad and would like to know if it would be worth my while to get an Android tab.

Thoughts?? And please no flaming, or trolling.....

If you already have an Ipad, I wouldn't bother jumping ship until it's time to upgrade.

I am a n00b to this type of technology, but a friend told me something that sold me on Android:

With Android, you can basically customize anything. That there are all sorts of things you can do to the phone (well, I was looking for a phone, so this is what I was told, I guess the same is for tablets). And with Apple, you are much more limited, and have less freedom in that respect.

I'm not advanced enough to currently do things like that, but I think I someday would like to, so I chose Android.

The husband and I have used both, but we choose Android for our tabs and phones. When you buy Apple, you limit yourself to what Apple offers, but with the Android OS, you have the ability to make use of other sources for your activities. I'm simplifying, of course, but the point is you have more freedom with Android. Besides that, the whole system just feels easier to use (IMO). Hope that helps you some!

I'm not an Apple fanboy, and I'm a fairly advanced tech/computer user. But Android has been a big disappointment for me. It's unpolished and very buggy. At first I thought it was just my old Droid 1, but I've tried some new phones that coworkers have gotten and they act up as well. Yeah, I know there are tons of custom ROMs out there, but a product should work at least somewhat well out of the box.

I will be giving up Android as soon as Apple releases an LTE iPhone.

In my experience, it's usually apps that are the problem.

I like going to the Market when I want to shop for an app! Thanks for the heads up, I hate it, but will accept change as I must.

You're going to have to be more specific then what "new phones" these were. The Droid 1 is so old, that you should really compare it more to an iPhone 3G.

And not sure if you know..but iOS apps crash more than Android ones. It's just not known by most Apple users because Android tells you when an app has force closed, rather than Apple just kicking you back to the Springboard (or Home Screen), do the common census is that iOS devices just run smoother and don't crash as often, when in fact the reality is that Android is more transparent about it.

It's part of the walled garden approach with Apple. A closed ecosystem definitely has it's benefits, but so does an open one.

To each their own, but I would say try out this generation of Android devices before instantly thinking that all Android devices are the same.

Agree with the comments about Why are you looking if you have an iPad? Just money burning in your pocket?

Sit on your money...don't buy anything until the new Windows 8 tablets are out...going to have the 1st true PC experience on a tablet.

But, to sum up the question...the only real knock you could have against an iPad for a typical user is COST. If you already bought one, I don't see the issue? Most of the Customization of Android is just a forum flaming topic that won't be touched by 90% of users...but I bought my Android Tablet (Asus Transformer) because it was $250 instead of $600...I'd trade it straight up for an iPad any day of the week though...and I am one of the more Anti-Apple guys you'd meet.

I found this funny, haha, how long are you going to wait? You only have 2 years before you are going to have to upgrade again, haha!

I think you'd be very alone in that... It completely contradicts all the "Androids allow you to change everything and iOS is much more straight forward"

I'm not sure - I don't have the time to research it all right now, and because of that, I have no idea if rooting phones voids the warranty. So I guess I was just going to wait until the warranty ended (1 year).

I have come to the conclusion that Andriods are more like muscle cars...great for mechanics who know how to teak and tinker with them.
Apple products are more like good luxury cars...just get in and enjoy them...no futzing with them. Smilie

If you know how to and like to tweak things then go andriod. If you would constantly have to ask someone how to do it or ask them to do it for you then go Apple. Smilie

Not a bad analogy considering the price of parts or repairs once you're out of warranty with Apple.

<---not a mechanic or techy enough to tinker and tweak my phone constantly.
Plus, after having the Evo which had such a crappy battery life (had to keep it tethered almost constantly) I am thrilled with my iPhone.

Burt then personal opinion is just that. Stick Out Tongue Smilie
