Staples Coupon Thread

1. What's the Staples app?
This is an app from Staples that provides access to your Staples account, as well as Staples rewards account, and provides some useful tools.
You can read more about it here: Linky [staples.com]

2. How can I get it?
Android version is here: Linky [google.com]
iOS version is here: Linky [apple.com]
Any android phone or iPhone will work. In addition, you can install it on iPod Touch, iPad, Android Tablets, or HP TP running Android.

3. What's "check-in"?
When you are in a Staples store, you can click on the "Check in" button, and once your location is determined by the app, you'll be presented with a confirmation, and a coupon will be issued. The coupons state that they expire in 24-48 hours after they are issued, but in reality they can be used until the "real expiration date" (see WiKi for details). Please note that you do NOT need to sign into your Staples and/or Staples rewards account to receive the check in coupons. Coupons are generated once per device every 24 hours if you check in every 24 hours once the previous coupon has expired. The store makes no difference to the process. Multiple store check-ins in the same 24 hours does not get you any more coupons. You get the same one with the same 16 digit code. Since the device number is stored at a Staples server and coupons are per device, multiple devices will give you unique coupons per device.

4. Do I have to be physically in the store to check in?
Luckily, the answer is no. You can "spoof" your location by using certain apps that trick your phone to report specific coordinates. Depending on the app, you can either enter the coordinates of a Staples store or find it on a map and use that to create check in coupons from home/work.
For Android, Fake GPS [google.com] works great, along with few other examples (e.g., Location Spoofer, etc). For iOS devices, please see the WiKi (you need to jail break your iOS device).

5. Can I keep the coupons beyond the 24-48 hour expiration time frame?
Yes. If you take a screen shot of the coupon, you can keep it and use it later. On some Android phones, as well as iOS devices, pressing down power and home (or power and volume down) buttons simultaneously takes a screen shot. For devices that don't have this "built in", there are 3rd party apps.

6. Are the coupons random?
As of now, they seem to follow a certain sequence as outlined in the Wiki.

7. Can I stack these coupons with other app and/or paper coupons?
The % off coupons stack with $ off coupons. If you have 1 app coupon and 1 paper coupon (in either format), it will work "easier" compared to having 2 app coupons, since you are not supposed to have 2 of them at the same time. You can try printing out some of the app coupons to combine them.

8. Can I obtain any other coupons, in addition to the check in coupons, from the app?
The app generates coupons that can be used in store, online or over the phone. You can log into your Staples Rewards account from the app and access your Coupon Wallet and use whatever coupons you may have in there based on their T&Cs (e.g., in store only, online/phone only, etc). Those coupons have nothing to do with the app; they are under your Staples Rewards account and can be accessed from the web interface using a PC or directly from the mobile app.

When I was checking out, I ended up giving the Windex q last and it didn't take at the register. Since I was at the end of the transaction and I had given 4 or 5 coupons already (20/60 BR, 10/75, and freebies) I didn't want to bother voiding the whole transaction.
Hmmm... I'm thinking now that the reason the Windex coupon was rejected isn't because it was it was ordered at the kiosk, but because of coupon presentation order. You gave the $20/60 BR before it and it's possible that coupon attached to all your BR items (including the Windex) and wouldn't allow any others after. All your other freebie coupons were OS not BR items. If possible, be sure to give all freebie coupons before any coupons that like to attach to items. wave

Ya, this was what i was thinking when i saw the above posts as we have seen the 10/50 OS coupon behavior. If we have a good cashier who does not look at subtotal after applying these item specific ones, then always better to give the BR coupon after all those item specifics, and then finally the king, 10/75.

Ahhh....you could be right about that. I was too focused on thinking of it as a freebie that I didn't think of it as a BR item.

A little OT, but speaking of BR items, I'm discovering that a LOT of products qualify as BR items. Not just those LED bulbs - tools, flashlights, humidifiers, etc. I just bought this Gerber multi-tool for $23 after PM to Amazon and a $20/60 BR q.

$65.99 at Staples
http://www.staples.com/Multi-Plie...uct_769301
$43.13 at Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Gerber-0753...B0006G5F1M

I had also considered this Leatherman for $35 ($55 at Amazon less $20 q) but wanted to keep it simple (and cheap as possible).

TMul used to always post hints that a BR coupon could be used on just about anything. I don't think the system is fully engaged in knowing what is break room and what is not. So, if they really look at what you are ordering they may or may not let it go through IIRC from past posts.

I had navigated through the Cleaning/Facilities/Tools menu and figured I'd test a few items in my cart with the q and most seemed to work - lint roller and spring clamps to give a few more examples. I figure for an online order, as long as the q applies and you are not bringing attention to the order (phone call, PM, etc.) you should be ok. Do you recall hearing of any incidents where someone placed an order and was contacted by Staples because an order was reviewed and a particular item considered ineligible for the q?

Yes but not recently. In those cases people were buying software with break room items. I think you will be ok with what you are doing as you are going through items that seem to fall into the broader BR category. Not sure where they really draw the line.

I have one device that has not generated a coupon in 5 days. I did an uninstall/reinstall on the same device within those 5 days and do not remember when I did it but still no coupons. Another device no coupons in 5 days either but no uninstall on that device. Have another device still generating coupons per day. I swear they are IP restricting coupons as all these devices are wifi. I need to power off my cable modem/router for at least 5 minutes and see if I can get a new IP address and see if that changes anything. There is a really nice Android app for IP addresses/etc. I found called Network Device Signal. Too bad it does not have the ability to change IP addresses. Not the free version anyway.

ETA: Just now on the device that is still generating coupons I got a $10/$75 good for a week. Yesterday which was the last day of the second cycle on this device I got a $10/$75 good for 2 days. Different 16 digit numbers between the two days for the same coupon. As per the above the $10/$75 appears to be the first coupon in a new cycle. Good riddance to Martha if she is hopefully now gone from the cycle.

Here's a link [google.com]to an Android VPN app called PandaPow VPN.

I have 5 android devices now and have had issues with 2 of them not giving coupons for 2-3 days, but for the past 2 days all devices have got new coupons, all over the same wifi IP. One of them is usually a pain to get to work and frequently decides not to give a coupon after a successful check-in, but sometimes I find I do see the coupon I was expecting later on in the app. I don't think they're limiting by IP, but it's possible and worth testing out. If power cycling with delay fails to dynamize your IP try out the VPN. (Yes I know dynamize isn't a real word Stick Out Tongue )

Looks like there may be some changes in the cycle. Last night I also got the $10/75 as the first coupon in a new cycle (not a re-install) instead of the Martha list. I triple-checked to make sure it wasn't an old coupon that reappeared.

Wanted to wait until my second check-in today before posting here. Second coupon I got today is the free ream.

So it looks like two q's might have been removed from the sequence:
Windex
$10/75
MS (new cycle)
$5/25 or 15% C/P
$10/75
ream
10%/75 (will see if I get this one tomorrow)

One iOS device is working and one iOS device is not working and one Android device is not working. All these worked flawlessly for the old app coupons and flawlessly for awhile under the new app. I am on 2.4.1 on all devices. I can check in successfully on all devices but only coupons on the one. They may not be IP restricted but something is definitely up with this new app as many others appear to be having problems as well generating coupons. Thanks for the VPN app. I'll give it a whirl.

Have you used any coupons from the devices not generating anything at the moment? Could it be that if one keeps generating a few coupons without using them, then the app stops for a while? Wild speculation...

Don't think so but who knows. I used my first new app coupon on Sunday on the one device that was working and is still working. Also, the first device I started generating coupons with the new app.
