Android tethering error?

acr 5,704 14,350 March 21, 2012 at 11:25 PM
Every time I unplug my phone from the battery being charged I get a tethering error message. Nothing seems to effect the phone, so this seems just more annoying than anything else. But does someone know what the cause of the error could be so I can fix it or stop getting the error message?

thanks

Does it also do it when you connect to computer with usb? Is the phone rooted? Is it currently or ever been tethered? Phone always done this and if not any recent updates to kernel or firmware?

Sounds like corrupt usb tethering mgr or system settings are set for usb tethering by default but should give same error if disconnecting from your pc.
If you have a backup good, if not get one as worst case scenario would be to do a factory reset and restore your data. Phone will have an error log but I'd venture one of those 2 things as the likely cause.

You're going to need to be more specific than just "Android phone".

1.) Device make and model
2.) Is it running stock (no modifications, rooting, or custom ROMs)
2a.) If it is. List your custom ROM and it's version.
3.) Are you charging via USB to a PC or otherwise?

Samsung Captivate Android 2.3, running stock not rooted, AT&T
I get the error plugging into my computer and wall outlet
Error message when plugging into computer (just checked) says -
TetheringManager (process com.tecace.tetheringmanager) has stopped unexpectantly.

I upgraded to 2.3 using the Samsung Kies Mini from my computer.

Something probably didn't update correctly or install correctly. Try reupdating/reinstalling the update. Or check to see that there isn't a tethering setting that's switched on. I have a Captivate as well, but I run a custom rom so I can't really help much more.

Plug in your USB cable to your PC & phone.

Go into the Settings>Wireless and Network>Tethering and Portable Hotspot
Click on USB tethering (this will start the service) and you will see a blue icon appear. Now take the cable out of the phone.

The tethering service icon should disappear and the tethering service should stop. I'm just not sure if it will work after a reboot.

I remember reading something about samsung and a frozen tethering mgr about a year ago and if not mistaken they also used AT&T so I'll see if I can dig that info up.

Few things you can try depending what the cause is like mentioned above about uninstalling the mgr, if possible, and reinstalling or trying to see if you can force close it and clear cache and settings using an app mgr.

Found it was only about a 2 month old issue and affected samsung phones including the captivate on AT&T after an update. Rooting and freezing or removing the manager would work and allow you to install your own bug free manager but if you don't want to get into all that I might try calling AT&T as this would be affecting a lot of phones.

Not sure of linking rules but there are a few forums and threads on this but nothing with a good fix except the factory reset but I still don't see how that would keep it from happening after updating again afterwards unless they have actually fixed it and expect you to do a factory reset and grab the new driver which would be BS to ask of your customers imo.
