Here He Goes Again: Bloomberg Set To Ban All Sugary Drinks Over 16 Ounces [cbslocal.com]

"............ Mayor Bloomberg, who is set to propose a ban on sugary drinks over 16 ounces everywhere, all across the city."

Really? This is supposed to "fight obesity"?

Right. Because whenever there is a problem that needs solving, call Uncle Sam to save the day.
Who cares if it is the job of the government or not?

What does Uncle Sam have to do with this story?

This is a proposed LOCAL LAW....not a federal law.

Since we already know what food are basically crap, I don't see why we can't just add a "tax" to it and punish the people who would indulge in it.. And the added benefit is that collected tax can be put into healthcare fund to support these people later on..

Sugar is not bad for you it is the HFCS that is, it is the lab-man-made sugar that is killing us

You're right and I thought about not bothering but I was responding to Nic, poster that can't find a reason to not want more government in our lives. This topic is as much about nanny-statism as it is about how much Bloomberg is being an idiot. What's next, ban free refills?

Science is much more than a body of knowledge. It is a way of thinking. This is central to its success. Science invites us to let the facts in, even when they don't conform to our preconceptions.

People can be aware of dangers and choose to engage in activities that harm them, can they not? Do we no longer own ourselves? If you believe in even the remotest type of property rights, our bodies are the barest minimum, if we don't own it, we can't really own anything.

Hyperbolic strawman FTL!

I know plenty of reasons for not wanting more government; but this is not one of them. This barely even affects your liberty except to encourage you to think about whether you really want that much soda.

The question is, why can't you make an argument w/o disparaging other people with false hyperbole?

And this does not prevent that.

It barely affects liberty? What if I own a 7-11 in NY? More rules and laws affecting how I can conduct business with another supposedly free individual affects my liberty quite significantly. You seem quite content to have government intrude as long as it's evil businessmen that get their freedoms limited. No hyperbole here. This is government intervention at its worse, using the excuse, "we're here to help."

Forcing businesses and consumers to behave in a certain way is not mere advice giving.

You okay with outlawing free refills?

The rights of a few business owners are outweighed by the health impacts on millions of their customers. That's why we don't allow them to sell poison, either.

So what if they have to get different size cups? Minor inconvenience.

More hyperbole. Limiting choice of consumers is not forcing them to do anything.

And businesses have to observe all kinds of regulations which prevent harm to their customers.

The slickdealer in me says no. But since I don't drink soda with sugar, I'm fine with limiting refills on those as long as I can get free refills on diet drinks. Stick Out Tongue

I can buy plenty of poison. How are business rights outweighed by other free individuals making personal decisions about what they eat, drink, smoke, inject, or snort? Rights are supposed to be protected unless they conflict with the rights of someone else. Isn't that why gays should be allowed to marry? You seem to be in agreement with Charles and Wu that if it can be shown that gay marriage can somehow, in the most tortuous path, demonstrate some harm, we should be able to ban it?

So I have to carry two cups, and have an extra cup holder in my car for the second one. If I'm allowed to buy 32oz soda, why should I not be allowed to have a proper container? I'm not surprised you like this proposed law considering how stupid I think it is.
