I just attempted to close my AMEX Gold Rewards card in an attempt to recoup the annual fee. I was ultimately told by the representative that I couldn't be refunded the fee due to the fact that I used the card once after the fee was billed. I didn't even see or pay the bill until a few weeks later and didn't it again after that, but she said it didn't matter.

Do I have any recourse at this point? I am still within 60 days of when the annual fee was billed.

Sure. You can sue them in small claims.

Thanks for reminding me to cancel my card. I just checked and I have a $175 credit ("Cr Adj Membership"). I assume this is credited towards the annual fee? This credit posted 3 weeks ago and I have yet to be charged the fee.

I can't escape the mental picture. theblaze.com is very clearly some sort of information anus yet some posters seem eager to attach their lips and deliver the product here.

If they end up not charging the fee and cutting me a check for $175, this would make the net profit from this deal go from $1250 to $1425 (assuming you were able to get the 125,000 points from AMEX's screwup)

I'm pretty sure that if you cancel anytime into your membership year, AMEX will refund the pro-rated amount. If you were to cancel in the first month, AMEX would refund 11/12 of the annual fee. Call back and talk to another rep or send a secure message to another rep.

I sent them a secure message earlier today asking them to refund me the annual fee. I received an email saying that they'd responded to my secure message later in the day. When I logged in to check it, it wouldn't show me the message because it said I had no cards on my account. Turns out they cancelled it, but I have no idea if they did the refund because their stupid system won't let me read their response to me.

If they aren't refunding my annual fee but have cancelled the card so I can't even use it I'm going to be extra pissed off. I guess I'll find out tomorrow when I call!

Iagree

AFAIK, Amex's official policy is to pro-rate any annual fee, regardless of how long it's been or how many charges you made. I think the CSR you spoke with was an idiot.

Call back, and speak to the cancellation/retention department.

That reminds me, I haven't gotten charged my annual fee on my Amex Plat yet, 3-4 months past due now. Not sure whats going on with that one, but glad that $450 fee hasn't hit me yet though. EEK!

Lucky bastard. Part of me wants to upgrade to Platinum, but I just don't see myself getting my money's worth. If I traveled more for work, I think it would be worth it. But all the Platinum benefits worth anything are really designed for heavy travelers.

I don't even consider myself a heavy traveler. I had just ran out of cards to sign up for. laugh out loud
This gave me 100k pts starting, and randomly 25k pts last month outta the blue. And as you mentioned already global entry credit, free priority pass, $400 AA travel gift cards credit. It definitely added up, considering my parents use all the points for Avios transfer.

It's nice knowing I have that safety (of AMEX perks) when traveling, but some places overseas don't accept AMEX, gets annoying at times. My Chase Sapphire Preferred is my go-to card without a doubt.

Yeah, I would have definitely signed up for the Platinum during the CU promotion if I knew it was available, though probably would have downgraded year 2.

I love my CSP card! It has the best point redemption system around. That, plus Discover for whatever they have 5% CB on for the quarter/month, is where 95% of our spending goes. I loved Amex until I got my CSP. Now, not so much. I hope they revamp their points program soon.
