I called AT&T and told them I'm thinking about cancelling my service, because a local competitor MetroPCS, has better deals. They offered me family text messaging for 6 months free, which is $30 a month. Told me to hang in there, times are hard, but they have shared family data plans coming this summer, and to enjoy the $30 credit for 6 months, then reconsider after seeing the shared data plans that are supposedly due out this summer.

I have 5 lines, and all 5 are still under contract, with over 1 year remaining. I told the rep I was willing to pay the ETF fee's because I'll save money in the long run.

This worked for 4 different people, figured I'd share with you guys.

Still Working as of 3/6/2013.
Still working as of 10/14/2013

By dialing 611, wait till it got pass the language selection,

press 1, 7, 5 for cancellation department!

Chat script:

Hi. I have been pricing around the market and noticed other companies are significantly cheaper. MetroPcs offers $50 unlimited everything and I am leaning towards switching over to them for the savings. I want to know if there are any incentives available to help me have a reason to stay.

If they mention ETF, say you would wait for your contract to end or paying the ETF to switch will save you money in the long run over staying with AT&T with your current bill.

Here is what to expect for those that are like me and nervous asking for things...
I called 611 then hit 1 then hit 7 then whatever number service cancelations was.

Then I told the lady "I have some friends that are using a local carrier and getting $50 unlimited everything and I'm wondering if there any incentives or promotions to reduce my bill."
She said "I understand you want to lower your bill but what carrier was it?"
I said "It's metropcs."
She pulled up some information and said "Are you aware that they throttle data after 2.5 gb of use?"
I said: "well i'm not worried about that because I have wifi at work and wifi at home."
She said "They also are only local calls for the unlimited calls. Long distance will be additional."
I said "Yeah, we also looked into virgin mobile and they have roaming charges but we don't really make long distance calls or leave our area."
She then asked "Is this for both lines that are considering leaving?"
I said "Yeah both lines would be transferring."
Then she came back and offered the promotion.

I called yesterday and was able to get a $30/month credit for 3 months, 5,000 roll over minutes (because I "had less than 1,000"), and the $20 texting. Appreciate all the help in this forum, thanks to all!

When I called, I was offered a whopping $25 one-time credit. I hate the luck of the draw. Haven't had time to call back yet...

I called, asked for a retention agent, looking to lower my bill due to financial difficulty. When I got through to the agent, I explained my particular financial difficulty, asked what they could do to lower my bill. I have a 550 minute family plan, he offered me a 450 minute family plan for $10 less, and offered me family texting for $20 instead of $30. He asked me if this would suit me, I said it was pretty good, but I was wondering if he could cover my recent upgrade fee. He said they are not allowed to waive upgrade fees and can get fired, made sure I understood that, then offered me a $40 credit split between two months. I'm happy to save money, so I didn't push it further. Didn't take too long either. Good luck to everyone who tries!

The bit about "he could get fired" is such crap. I think they are saying things like that now because they are catching on that WE are catching on and are hitting them big time for "help" with our financial situations. I also say that because I did an upgrade 3 weeks ago to a new phone, and called the following week and got the $36 removed.

I agree, but I do have a legit "financial situation" so I'm just glad I got something from my efforts. Will probably try again in 6 months and see what I can do. I will probably try calling earlier in the day and see what happens. I mean, whats the difference between $40 off my bill split between two bills and removing the fee? Next time I will say something different and try to get more cash, maybe call earlier in the day.

Called and asked for help with bills, got offered $25 credit for next 3 months.
I then pressed to get some rollover, put me on hold and came back with 1500 rollover minutes.
Thanks to everybody in this thread!

Called AT&T. 1st line customer service was able to offer $20/month family text plan but I insisted on 6 months free. Got transfer to detention and was able to get it without too much hassle. Great services. I hope AT&T has good family text rate after 6 months after we get used texting all the times.

I already had 6 months free messaging.
Called back when that ended and got $10 for life ($20 monthly messaging), maybe 2 months ago.

Called back just now and complained some more about my 2 iPhone lines costing $138/mo - WITH my 25% employer discount.
Told them I could go to T-Mobile.
Received a $30/mo credit for 3 months that is reflective on my current bill due 5/19.

Ill call back again August 1 and get another discount.
iPhone calendar notated for 8/1 call back Smilie

Has anyone done this and been told "Ok, pay the $1000 in ETF's let me transfer you" and got their bluff called? that would be funny.
My response would be, "I'm not ready to cancel until after I've moved my number to a new provider. I'm calling to see what you can offer so that might prevent me move to a new provider (once I've changed it's too late)".

I was considering changing carriers (a few carriers back) and called twice to see what they could do, when I called to cancel they actually complained that I should have called them first and they would have offered a better plan, I told them I did (twice!). So now I always ask...

Realistically, if I'm shopping around and if someone offers me an awesome deal to switch, I might not ever find that sales/operator person again and get that offer, so I need to be prepared to switch.

Still alive and kicking.

Spoke to a regular CS on a Premier account. Told her to transfer me to cancellations. She said she will transfer me to retentions but asked why I wanted to cancel. After saying my MetroPCS spiel, she told me she could give me $30 credit for 6 months. Took the credit (and I didn't even have to be transferred to retentions). Cool.

Thanks OP!
