Behr or Glidden Paint? (at Home Depot)

arjun90 1,213 105 June 30, 2012 at 09:00 PM
I usually use Benjamin Moore for Paints; however, recently, I resurfaced a garage wall for a neighbor (since the wall overlapped with my property) and am having trouble deciding between Behr and Glidden Paint. I don't want to use expensive paint for such a project. Therefore, I am resorting to Home Depot. If Home Depot was your only option, would you choose Behr or Glidden Paint?

I'm in the midst of painting a ~900 sq ft condo and I used Glidden on the bathroom walls, door, and trim and Kilz on all of the ceilings. I love the Kilz ceiling paint; it sticks well and is virtually odorless. The Glidden paint is decent. It didn't adhere quite as well as the Kilz, but aside from a few needed touch-ups, everything went fine. For the walls in the rest of the house, I opted to use Behr after 2 different Home Depots had trouble getting the Glidden color I selected to match the swatch. I haven't started painting w/ the Behr yet, but the workers at both Home Depots informed me that they think Behr is a better paint. For the difference of $7 per can, I suppose it depends on just how much painting you're doing. I don't think there's a huge difference between the 2, but Behr seems to be more highly regarded.

If its an exterior wall, home depot sells a cheap barn/fence paint and primer in the same can. I used that on my garage.

I have used Behr to paint a few rooms in my house and so far it's fine. Each room required 2 coats, but I don't think this is the pain'ts fault. The walls were in rough shape to start with and I was making big drastic color changes. I would be interested to see what everyone else things is the "best" since I have a bathroom I am in the process of remodeling and will be painting the drywall soon.

It seems there are 2 different types of Glidden paint, one sold by Home Depot, another by Walmart, and they don't always perform the same.

The March 2012 Consumer Reports rated interior paints. E=worst, A = best.

paint/price/hiding/stain resistance/gloss change/scrub resistance/smoothness:

Satin:

Benjamin Moore Aura Satin, $66, A A A A B
Behr Premium Plus Ultra Satin, $33, A A B A B
Kilz Casual Colors Satin, $27, A A $ A C
Glidden Premium Satin (Home Depot), $23 B A A A C
Behr Premium Plus Satin Enamel, $25 B A C B B

Thanks everyone. I decided to go for Behr Premium Plus Exterior Satin Enamel (5 1-gallon buckets). Hopefully a wise-choice. Smilie

I used Behr on the house 5 summers ago,

It's just starting to frazzle and that might be limited to the places I sprayed on way to much of an area of mold remover and was slow to get some areas rinsed.

Overall, though, the place still looks great. If it wasn't for those few frazzles, which I will touch up this fall, I'd say we can go several more years without repainting at all.

Quite pleased.

I have no idea how Consumer Reports rate products. It seems they get paid to mention such ratings, lol.
