Thread Details

I just signed up for an Amex card and it probably wont be here before the Dell Outlet 4th of July sale is over. Has anyone ever had any luck talking them into letting you use the card for purchases before it physically arrives?

Sure, just activate it & start using it.

American Express & other credit cards need to be activated before you can use them. Just dial the activation line from your home phone & enter the card #. It will say the card is activated & you can start using it then. Good luck!

And how will he do that without the card number? Then he needs the 4 digit security code and expiration date on top of that to make a purchase.

He said he has it, how can you charge purchases if you don't have the credit card #?

I think you're misunderstanding... she/he probably applied for the card online, saw that they got auto approved and would like to use the card immediately, but she/he can't because they have to wait for the card to arrive in the mail.

To the OP... I know of no possible way that you can do this. I too am awaiting a card at the moment, and would love to begin using my 0% APR right now on a camera, but I can't. Some stores allow you to checkout and use a brand new opened card at the moment of applying for it and getting approved (Macy's is a good example). Other than that, you'll have to wait.

I was in the same situation couple of weeks back. I called the amex guys and they said no you can't. Nobody knows the cvv number other than you, when you receives it.

Ah... no they don't. I rarely use cards in person. Hence I never do that crazy call the number activation thing that the stickers says to do on the card. Card works just fine. The funny thing is that when I log into my Citibank account, it "reminds" me to activate the cards I've been using for years.

A few years back you could use the amazon chase card before physically receiving it. edit: only at amazon. The only other way would be if amex has virtual account numbers on their website.

call & ask for overnight delivery. if YOUR card is already in transit, add an authorized user by phone & request expedited shipping.

bulb LOL. That's exactly what he's asking and you're saying to sign the card and use it. He doesn't have the card (yet, but the account is open) thus the whole point of this thread.

They'll overnight you the card for new accounts. Even if "your" card is already in transit, they'll cancel that number and send the new one for free. Typically the fee is $5, but for a new account they don't usually charge as they're looking to get the card in your hands and roll that fee revenue.

If you call they can sometimes offer you a temporary number to make a 1 time purchase.

+1 on the overnight replacement.

I did this with my Chase Sapphire Preferred card because I was traveling internationally and wanted to use it on my trip. They goofed up and overnighted me two replacements twice (one for myself and my wife), plus the one that was in transit. So I have three of each card now, but I get them the next day. Amex will do the same thing if you ask nicely.

But no, without having the physical card you can not activate or use it. AFAIK, Amex does not offer virtual cards through their website. If it was a company that did (Chase, Citibank, BOA, etc.), then you MIGHT be able to do it that way before receiving the card. However, normally you need to have the card to create your online account in the first place, which is a catch-22 there.
