Thread Details

This thread originally from Chokaay. I tried to bump and could not since it was so old. Give reps to him if you rep.

NOTE: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BUY YOUR TV FROM COSTCO TO GET THIS WARRANTY! NOR DO YOU HAVE TO BE A COSTCO MEMBER.

BETTER SquareTrade TV Warranty: (<$500) $29.99, ($500-$1K) $59.99, ($1K+) $99.99 @ Costco.com & B&M
Since the 35% SquareTrade coupon thread is generating so much excitement, and I noticed many people begging for coupons in that thread are looking to warranty TV's, I thought I'd post my own thread to help SDers get a BETTER SquareTrade TV Warranty for CHEAPER (even after the 35% coupon)!

Depending on the price of the TV, it MAY be a better deal to buy your SquareTrade TV Warranty from COSTCO or COSTCO.COM (instead of Squaretrade.com directly):

TV's under $500: $29.99
TV's $500 - $1,000: $59.99
TV's over $1,000: $99.99

For those prices you get 3 years AND your SquareTrade warranty DOESN'T begin until AFTER your manufacturer's warranty runs out as opposed to running parallel like when you purchase on SquareTrade.com. Thus, your TV will have 1 yr manufacturer's warranty (typically) + 3 years SquareTrade warranty = 4 years warranty.

If you buy your TV from Costco, you get 1 year from Costco free AND your SquareTrade warranty DOESN'T begin until AFTER that coverage ends. Thus, your TV will have 1 yr manufacturer's warranty (typically) + 1 year Costco extended warranty + 3 years SquareTrade warranty = 5 years warranty.

In comparison, buying TV warranties directly from SquareTrade will give you less years (only 3 years total since warranties run parallel to manufacturer's warranty), and typically are more expensive (especially if your TV is $1,000 or more).

3 Years (For TVs Under $500)

3 Years (For TVs: $500 to $1,000)

3 Years (For TVs Over $1,000)

ok so there is no physical shipment? It just comes via e-mail?

I want to buy for my 50" TOshiba i bought for $399 from bestbuy.

Any advantage of costco member buying vs non-costco?

If no advantage, i'll just pay the $1.50 surcharge.
No it's just the surcharge. I bought one 6 months ago. It was delivered via email. It was not instant though if I recall correctly.

There is an advantage from buying the TV itself from costco. The second year warranty bounce but instead of 5 year coverage you'll get for 4. FirstWorldProblems.

And when you registered for the warranty, it extended it 3 years after the manufacturer warranty?

right now this is costing me like $33.50 after surcharge and tax.

If I use the 40% BF coupon square trade that cost me $40 for a 4 year warranty but that kicks in from date of purchase.

I don't believe the bf 40% will work here. I believe that's for Squaretrade.com purchases only.

But yes it starts after the end of the MANUFACTURER'S warranty.

no yeah the coupon won't work here, i was just doing comparison.

i had $399 tv, if i purchase directly from squaretrade it will cost $40 after coupon for a 4 year coverage starting at time of purchase.

the costco is costing me $33.50 for a 3 year coverage but starts after manufacturer warranty ends.

i guess to save a few bucks i should go with costco. I'll see if my friend can buy it for me as long as i can register for it online using my information.

when you got the e-mail from costco, was it just a link or code, that you input on squaretrade site and fill in your information or was it pre-filled with the costco order info.

Yes, all is sent via email. No, they dont cover sales tax or shipping on a claim regardless of how much coverage you buy. Yes, it's good on eBay purchases. In fact, refurbished tvs are covered ONLY if they were bought from eBay. Squaretrade IS a reliable company with mostly good reviews.

All that being said, it does pay to compare it to the warranty offered by the store you are buying your tv from. Squaretrade is a 'depreciating' warranty. That means that each time you make a claim/repair on a specific item, the cost of that repair is deducted from the value of the warranty. For example, if you had two repairs on a $500 tv, and each repair was $250 (parts and labor), your warranty would end regardless of the length that you originally bought. This is a little discussed fact of their warrantys. A Walmart warranty, for example, would pay you the full cost of the sme $500 tv if there were future problems for the full term of the warranty , regardless of how many prior repairs under the warrnty and regardless of how expensive those repairs were.

I just dug through my emails and found my costco email: Shipping & Terms
Thank you for your purchase. Once your credit card is processed, SquareTrade will send you an email detailing the process needed to register your service plan; please follow these directions carefully. If you have any questions please call SquareTrade at 1-877-927-7268.

Costco sent me a Order Received, Sent to Fulfillment, and Shipped all in the same day. I didn't get a ST email about instructions. If I recall correctly ST had a register retail link on their webpage I used. I couldn't find it on their webpage right now however a quick google search brought up this: http://www.squaretrade.com/square...put.action

bought the panasonic TC-P50U54 from costco, got 2 years warranty from costco, and since we bought with amex an extra 1 year. if anything happens in 3 years, it'll be a good excuse to get a new TV, maybe 4K by then will be affordable. i really want to get the squaretrade warranty for $30 to extend coverage to 5 years, but all things considered, i wouldn't want it.

I decided to continue in the registration process and it ask you for the following:

We just need a little more information to set up your account. Please enter the last name on your Costco account and an email address.

Costco Membership ID

Last Name

It appears you will need a costco membership id when registering

I just talked a Squaretrade CSR and he said that if I didn't buy the TV from Costco, the warranty will run concurrently with the manufacturer warranty (just like if you have bought it from their website.) Can someone who bought this via Costco if this is the case?

Just FYI about some information I just learned, for people still visiting here, who have new toys to protect...

In looking into square trade after hearing it mentioned a few times around here, I found another older thread about square trade warranties, and learned that you can get ST warranties through Costco, including on tv's purchased elsewhere, for pretty cheap.. Some on that thread claimed you don't have to be a member, but that there is a surcharge for non-members, but I'm not sure about that.

So I checked it out, and on squaretrade.com, for a t.v. $300-$399, I can get 4 year extended warranty for $65.99, which means + 3 years coverage from ST after the first year manufacturer warranty, for a total of 4 years.

Through Costco, on a tv under $500, it's $29.99 for a 3 year, PLUS, they first give you a 1 year extension on manufacturer warranty, AND it's 3 years of ST coverage AFTER the end of that first 2 years, for a total of 5 years for just $29.99.

So definitely very much worth looking into if you're interested in getting a ST extended warranty for any new BF/CM toys.

Also, checked for those with bigger budgets, and a 4 year (1 mfr +3 ST) warranty, direct from square trade for tv's that cost $1000-$1499, $1500-$1999, and $2000-$2999, are $169.99, $199.99, and $299.99 respectively, vs. $99.99 on tv's over $1000, for the same 5 total years I mentioned above, from ST through Costco.

Thanks for pointing this out. Was able to get a 3 year warranty on both of my TV's 500 or less and 1000 or more for $140. Plus the terms are better since it starts after the manufacturers warranty.

For my television purchase, (599-699 range), a SQ warranty + 40% off coupon yields the same price as Costco BUT the years differ (slightly).

AMEX will add on a year to the manufacturer's warranty at the conclusion of both the manufacturer and third party warranties, which means, I'll get 5 years with SQ's 4 year plan.

Costco, offers 2 years Concierge service, plus 3 years from SQ. But the question is how that 2 years applies when you purchase the warranty for non-Costco television.

You will get no Costco Warranty for a non-Costco TV.

In Your Case

If purchased 4 Year Plan through squaretrade directly you would get

Year 1 - Manufacturer and SquareTrade
Year 2 - SquareTrade
Year 3 - SquareTrade
Year 4 - SquareTrade
Year 5 - AMEX (Never heard of a CC company offering warranty to start after both manufacturer and 3rd party)

If purchased 3 year plan through Costco your coverage would be as follows

Year 1 - Manufacturer
Year 2 - SquareTrade
Year 3 - SquareTrade
Year 4 - SquareTrade
Year 5 - AMEX

Close, but you have your years wrong for the SQ direct warranty. It'd be like this:

Year 1 - Manufacturer (Squaretrade)
Year 2 - SquareTrade
Year 3 - SquareTrade
Year 4 - AMEX
^ Assuming I pick the 3 year plan, instead of the four.

Are you saying that "if you purchased through Costco your coverage would be..." is in reference to the warranty being purchased by Costco for a non Costco TV or were you saying that if I had bought the TV and warranty from Costco?

If you purchased the TV at Costco you would get the Costco double warranty. If you did not purchase the TV at Costco you can still purchase the SquareTrade warranty through Costco but will not get any of the Costco warranty benefits.

I assumed you were comparing the 4 year direct from SquareTrade plan to the Costco 3 year plan as the costs, after 40% SquareTrade coupon, would be equal.
