Another support issue.... anyone getting random hangs/reboots?

It happens pretty much every day. I thought it was a hibernate/sleep issue because I always noticed that it had rebooted when waking up from sleep. But now it seems to be happening if I just leave it on and plugged in. Kind of annoying, to say the least.

I did find a couple folks on youtube who mention the restart upon wake and traced it to the Atheros wifi card drivers. So I used that as an excuse to switch to the Intel dualband BT card. Which works fine. But the hang/reboot issue (I guess it could be two issues) remains.

I *was* thinking I'd use restore and rollback a month or so, but then realized the wasn't turned on until recently! Duh! Folks, if you think the ability to roll back to a prior system snapshot is a good thing, check your windows Restore (charms/search "restore"/settings) and make sure it's actually turned on and setting restore points..

At this point I'm kind of thinking I might just live with it, then do a clean install when win 8.1 preview comes out in June. But a simple fix sooner would be better.

Anyway, I don't expect a solution, but if you have the same issue chime in and maybe we can figure out if this is an s400ca specific problem.

Hey all -- I'm quoting some old messages because I'm not sure if anyone is still watching this thread anymore and I'd love to generate some discussion.

Has anyone "upgraded" to Win 8.1 and found wonky Windows Experience scores? I finally upgraded to 12GB ram yesterday. And as of today I'm running latest Asus bios (210) and the newest Graphics Drivers from Intel's site (Driver Version: 15.33.14.64.3412). I'm also running the Intel Wifi/BT wireless card (though I doubt that makes any difference).

So I've got lots of upgrades, yet my score tops out at 5.1 (because of my 5.1 on Desktop Graphics score). This is a bummer because I think some of you were seeing 5.6 last year.

My first thought (hope?) is that Windows 8.1 computes these scores differently than 8.0. Can anyone else running 8.1 try the test and tell me what your numbers look like? Even better if you have the 8.0 scores too.

Th catch here (thank you MS!) is that Microsoft removed the GUI for the Windows Experience scores from Windows 8.1. You either have to run it from a command line or an external program. I tried both ways, but external is easier. I used the "Winaero WEI tool" http://www.eightforums.com/free-d...8-1-a.html

My scores on Windows 8.1 with 12GB RAM, the Intel Wifi card, and latest bios and drivers (via WEI tool) are:
Overall 5.1
Processor 7.1
Ram 7.4
Graphics 5.8
Biz/Desktop Graphics 5.1 (wtf?)
Primary Hard Drive 5.9

Previous Win 8 scores (with original Bios, stock 4GB ram, and year old drivers were:
Overall 4.6
Processor 6.9
Memory 5.9
Graphics 4.6
Biz Graphics 6.2 (wft? Currently 4.6!)
Hard Disk 5.9

If anyone is inclined, I'd love to compare scores.

Thanks for the drivers. I installed a 4GB RAM and it bumped everything except the graphics performance even though gaming graphics went up. After installing the drivers, though the total windows experience went up from 4.5 to 5.6. Really worthwhile I guess..
Any chance you have the scores for 8.1?

You're welcome, I like this thread its the best place to find people with our exact system lol.
We should try to keep this thread going. This is about the point in the machine lifecycle where people need to replace keyboards, and hardrives and the like....and Asus -- useless when the machines were new -- will be even less help.

Yep, this is the thread. Did anyone try my speedup thing yet? Man what a difference!
I tried it, but my boot is still kinda slowish (1 min?). That's kinda what makes me suspect something weird (driverwise?) in my system.

Was having slow computer issues,...<snip> Went to asus website and saw this warning Note!! If your system contains IRST (Intel Rapid Storage Technology) or Nvidia VGA driver...
I'm not seeing anyting IRST on my machine. Did you ever get to the bottom of this?

I'm getting almost the same scores, down from Windows 8. I have the latest drivers as well (thanks for the heads up on the bios). I changed the VGA setting in the BIOS to 512MB and my Desktop Graphics score went to 4.9.

On the speedup thing, there's a new version of ExpressCache for windows 8.1. Look in the Windows 8 section under Utilities (of the SC400A drivers on Asus site). I'm still running that regularly and my boot is under 10 seconds. Smilie

Thanks! I'll try the BIOS adjustment. I scoured the internets after I posted and found a few cases where people noted how their scores went *down* with 8.1, but real world performance stayed the same. Best benchmark would have been regular tests with an actual benchmark program, but I don't care enough to downgrade to win 8 and pull memory to run the test Smilie

Now if I could figure out this weird blob thing that appears in the middle of my display when the lid has been closed for a while. Kinda oval shaped. Starts at about 3" x1." It's almost like a layer of the display is delaminating. After the computer is on for a while (heating up? active pixels?) it slowly fades away -- massaging it helps too. Which looks kind of odd.
