This years edition of Costco KS private label single malt is available in some stores in MA. Price $44.99 per 750ml bottle. It is aged 20 years and sherry cask finished. Seems like a great deal for the age for fellow SDers. If you've tried it, please share some tasting notes here.
  • Costco Item Number 650728
  • You usually don't need Costco membership if you are only buying liquor. At least where I am, no surcharge either, you pay the same as us members.
  • Due to state liquor regulations etc, some Costco liquor stores are operated by independent liquor/wine shops that may/can not carry Costco KS private label products
  • Call your stores ahead to verify availability if in doubt

Macallan was shown as the distillery in last year's version but the price was about twice as much. This year they might have gotten this from a different Speyside source.

Cheers.

Just picked up two bottles of the 20 year and 1 bottle of the Macallan 15 year at the Willowbrook Costco in NJ.

They had quite a few cases of the 20 but not that many of the 15.

Just tried the Macallan 15. I like it. Not as strong a Sherry flavor as the 20. A little truer to the traditional Speyside. I feel like its a bit smoother than the 20. Personally, I would pick up couple of bottles of each favoring the macallan 15 slightly.
thanks for your feedback
im a non-snobbish, non-export single malt drinker as well

My dad and I had the same opinion. We tried both the 20 and the Macallan 15, neat. 15 is smoother but the 20 is a bit richer and more flavorful. I caught a hint of sherry or oak in the 15 but the 20 was a bit too strong for me to catch a strong taste of anything particular in the little bit that I tried. Either way, it's good single malt for the price.

By the way, tons of both scotches available at the new Costco in DC. I've found a new favorite Costco. Brand new, clean, and they sell liquor - totally awesome. Picked up KS bourbon, vodka, both scotches, and a huuuuuge bottle of Christmas ale. Fun times!

Taste test of a newbie scotch whisky drinker.

Finally was able to sample the 20 yo. Used a little cold water and my cool little whiskey glass. Definitely is on the sweet side but I can understand this is smooth single malt as it goes down. As others have mentioned, the sherry finish is noticeable along with hints of caramel on the tongue and the nose.

I'm actually looking forward to cooking with this malt too. It's a good easy drinker and something that should please your buddies who aren't snobby drinkers.

Picked this up and thought it was pretty nice. Lagavulin and Oban is also on sale for $13 off. Those are a great buy.

I have a bottle of Kirkland 15 from last year. I'm going to try it side by side with the 20 later.

Blue for 127 is a pretty good deal. I've never had it before. Is it really worth it?

And does anyone know how long the Oban sale goes for?

The Costco liquor sales last until the end of the year. Neither of the two Kirkland bottles being discussed here are on sale. When they run out, I guess the sale is over.

I bought the 20 year last night and really liked it. Two of my scotch drinking friends were also impressed. I felt it was smoother than the few other scotchs I've tried before.

At our local Costco here in So.Cal the Oban sale ends on 12/31/12.

got 5 of these badboys and didn't really like them. my mom did, but the rest of the fam didnt/had better. was going to give one to a neibour, family, good friend, and a few other people. decided to to return all of them.

disclaimer-dont know much about whiskey. if i do drink it its in shot form/forced to. jameson, makers, glenlivet, walker red and black, macallan, bushmills. i do enjoy makers the best of the list and black. find both to be of full flavor, doable on the rocks and smooth. i really didnt have a chance to check the scent, taste, and likability of the above as i did with the kirkland brand.

i do have to say its SMOOTH and the cast is enjoyable. possibly as a purist wiskey is not my thing. blend vs single/added flavors. I do like something a bit sweeter but i do have to say again it goes down very smooth. all is enjoyable except the breath after and i get the rush of alcohol burning. i did try to swish the drink around in my mouth and try to get some aromas to pop, but all i could taste was alchol burning my tongue a similar feeling when using mouthwash with alchol. i did try this with a bit of water. it helped bring out some flavors and make it a bit easier in terms of that first breath after drinking, but still not enjoyable. idk maybe this skill of drinking booze straight up aint for me Frown
didn't find it to be very sweet then again i don't know much about whiskey. what i can't get over/need to work on is the fiery burn after taking a gulp.

btw what other alchols do people sip on? vodka or rum? might be your cup of tea, but drinking this straight up is too tough on my body. Frown

Still a bunch (about 100) bottles left in the Naperville Costco.

With the chipped ice tip that was mentioned earlier, I did get depth of flavors. I was spoiled at my workplace that uses nothing but Bushmills as the official company liquor...and its mostly Bushmill 16 which is north of $100 per bottle. This Kirkland rates just as good as the Bushmill 16 IMO.
