I was in Dillard's this morning and the cashier told me they are definitely having their 50% off sale on New Year's Day. This discount applies to previously discounted and clearanced merchandise.

In the past, this sale was for B&M and available online as well. If you plan to shop online, get your items into your cart early and check out as quickly as you can; things tend to go out of stock pretty fast.

My store normally opens at 10 but the cashier thought they would be opening early, 8 or 9, so be sure to check with YOUR store about their hours on New Year's Day.

Here is the Dillard's Return Policy as stated on the back of their receipt (this receipt is dated 11/26/12, for reference's sake):

"Dillard's will issue a refund in the form and amount of the original tender paid (including sales tax) or Dillard's will issue a Merchandise Credit at the customer's choice, when each of the following conditions has been met:
1. Merchandise will be accepted for return for thirty (30) calendar days from date of purchase, except as otherwise stated on the face of the receipt or at point of sale (ie 3 day returns on 65% + merch); and
2. The merchandise must be in its original, unused condition unless there is a manufacturer's defect; and
3. The merchandise must be accompanied by either the original Dillard's Receipt or the original Dillard's Proof of Purchase Label.
Dillard's does not give Price Adjustments. Refunds for check purchases will have a 10 day waiting period before a cash or check refund is issued."

Soooo, I don't see how they can deny you a return to your bank card or any other form of payment? Maybe you got a "special" associate lol.

I guess their mentality is since they have discounted so much they dont want an item from 2010 being returned in 2012....their discount reflects the fact that it is old/discontinued/last season merchandise
How does a 30 day return policy impact that? I mean, talking extreme, you're talking 2 year returns of clothing.

I can name any number of companies with liberal return policies that do just fine, if you want to get extreme. REI who has member only no return sales on all returned merchandise, all of which could be returned originally at any time for any reason. Or Bed Bath and Beyond that continues to roll in the dough with a liberal return policy. Or Costco, that has only limited returns on TV and electronics.

If this return / rebuy was such a problem for Dillards and they see that as the reason for some of their financial difficulties, they're barking up the wrong tree with this solution. I'm not the only one in this thread saying that with 3-day returns, they shop elsewhere when it comes to clothing gifts.

Regarding purchasing with credit or debit, do what you want. I personally use a cc with rewards for my purchases. Those that purchased clothing for me this Christmas used a debit, thus I know what I'm talking about with regards to this new policy. According to the manager, the change was made here some months ago and all debit / bank card transactions are only given merchandise credit on returns. I'm simply pointing that out to anyone who may make a purchase that may require a return. Take it as you will.

unless they consider payments made with a check to be the same as a bank card...ie...10 day period

It wasn't just the associate, it was confirmed by the manager as well. I think you should inquire during your next shift, but I was told this was new policy in place for months. I made the same argument that a bank / debit is same as cash. Amount of time from purchase, if in return period, does not matter. If the item had a 30 day return and it was day 25, it doesn't matter, you will NOT get cash / refund to the bank.

You want problems on a return at Dilliards? Pay by debit / bank card and try to get cash back or it put back in the account. I'm telling you, without getting a manager and arguing, it's going to be a merchandise credit only. It's just a fair warning since most don't seem to know of this new change, and maybe it doesn't effect you. But if you plan, for whatever reason, to pay by debit.....

I think this is what may be the issue: when you return something to a bank/debit card, they usually need to reswipe the card and re-enter the PIN. If you were returning something that someone else bought for you, you probably did not have the card with you and that's why you were offered merch credit instead. Did you have a gift receipt? Or just the Proof of Purchase label (little yellow sticker)? Again, I wasn't there, so I am not saying this is 100% accurate, just my observation.

That is NOT the issue. I had a yellow sticker and receipt. It doesn't matter if you hand them the bank card or not during the return. Again, this is now policy on debit cards purchases and returns at Dilliards, period. "Offered" implies there were options "offered". There were not. They will not put it back on the debit card, they will not give you cash. I can not be more clear, and they (both employees and manager) were very clear. Only pushing it with a manager got a cash return.

I'm speaking from experience within the last week.

that can clearly be the case

I saw summer merchandise hanging the other day for 65% off in the store that was clearly at least a year old

Many times this is sent to the outlet stores...sometimes the store hangs onto it and discounts

if you have merchandise that was not 65% off( or more)...then you have 30 days

that frankly...should be ample time to know if the item works or not

As I said before...please tell me a store that has the quality of Dillards that normally offers products that these huge discounts

As I said before..I am man that wear a lot of Ralph Lauren

Dillards carries an ample selection of Ralph Lauren that is priced in the $500-700 range retail

I have purchased much of that over the years for 75-85% off retail

the only other places I can find that level of merchandise is Nordstrom/Saks/Neimans...and it is NEVER discounted that much
Though they do have a more liberal return policy

In regard to Home good...certain Dillards( in the high end area) have Lailque and Costa Boda crystal
Again...Saks and Neimans( and other small specialty stores) only have these brands

Again...I have bought several pieces at 75-85% off retail

I will take Dillards limited return policy with these quality and pricing...rather than pay more and have a 90 day return policy all day long

Let me know where I can find the quality of goods I want, at Dillards discounted pricing with some liberal return policy?

Seriously...there is no free lunch

This sale only applies to items with pink clearance tags. Christmas stuff will go to 75% (or 65% like their other stuff...salesperson said 75% though) on NYD, BUT they never have pink tags on Christmas items. Right now they have the original tags and a sign that says 50% off. This is unfortunate :-( Christmas stuff *should* be considered permanently marked down, since they aren't going to put it back to full price. Maybe they do it differently elsewhere, but in AR and TN they stick to the flat % off on NYD for Christmas stuff and no extra 50%.
JUST LET IT GO DILLARDS! IT IS CHRISTMAS STUFF, YOU DON'T WANT TO HOLD ON TO ALL OF THAT!

Anyway...I will, of course, be there when they open like I always am on NYD, but I never have as much luck as I do with other sales. I don't buy unless I can get 65% + the additional 30, 40, or 50%. Seems like on NYD it is always that they don't have the original markdown amount high enough or the don't have as big of a selection. But I will be there just in case Smilie

Things to keep an eye out for: Fragrance gift sets and regular "christmas gift" type things that are sometimes even wrapped.

then

1. Walk in with Cash and if you return they will refund you cash.....

2. Get/use a Dillards credit card...get the 10% off rewards and free shipping...and dont let them use your money while you decide if you want the item...use theirs

As I am typing this, I am talking with a former coworker who is working at Dillard's right now. I asked her about this new "policy" and she had no clue what I was talking about. I even asked her to look at the back of a receipt from today and the return policy is still the same as before. Maybe this was just your store, I'm not sure, but at least at the store that I frequent the most, the return policy has not changed. Perhaps we should just say that those who are paying with a debit card should inquire of the policy before their purchase, and drop the issue Smilie.

This is from the Dillard's website Dillard's Return Policy [dillards.com] as well, does not state anything about debit card returns for merch credit only.

For the sake of being clear, I'll simply state that the purchases were made in Wichita, KS, returns to the Oak Park Mall stores in KC. Again, both employees and manager state that is now the treatment for debit store purchases. It does not go back to the bank as a refund, and cash is not an option. You will be forced to pitch a fit to the manager to get other than a merchandise card. He stated it was a change implemented some months ago.

Remember, the gf had to trek to the woman's store for her return. She received the same speech there as I did.

In the end, I got my cash back on Christmas returns (hers and mine) after arguing with the manager, so it's no skin off my nose. I just wanted to save someone else the same experience.

Can we try and return this thread to the original topic ... Dillard's New Year's Day sale? Please?

If anyone finds some bargains (online or in store), and would like to share, please do. Or if you have a plan of attack that others might find useful, share that, too. Smilie

So how do we tell what is "pink tag" online? Is it just anything on sale?

I want to buy these uggs:

And these oxfords:

Planning to put em in my cart and try to check out at midnight or so. Think it will work?

I went to my local store. It's a smaller one but there didn't seem to be much with pink tags. Anyone finding any great deals?

My bad Sadwalk

I went yesterday to do some scouting, and I was actually kind of disappointed. There were some decent women's shoes and boots marked 30% off, only one pair of toddler Stride Rites (that dd already has) Frown, most clothes were only 40%, and very little Christmas was left. There were a lot of the higher end brands of handbags marked down (Coach, Dooney, Micheal Kors, etc), and as usual tons of jewelry, as well as some nice wooden jewelry boxes. For those with tween girls, Justin Bieber fragrance gift sets were pink tagged, so they'll be included too, if you need any cheap gifts. I'll still be there when they open, but I'm not as impressed as past years.

Most years, I found the best deals were usually in the Home store. So I would go there first, park the Hubby on a bed to watch everything I would bring him, debate/decide what I wanted, and checkout. That way dh could take those bigger items to the car while I browsed clothes, shoes, etc. But this year, I think I may start in Shoes then hit Accessories and clothes, then eventually hit up Home Store. I'll have a toddler with me this year and some of the older women get catty when they think you're taking "their" Christmas ornaments, haha.
