It is portable all right, but NEVER AGAIN will I purchase WD drives. They cannot be used as internal SATA drives, WD got a stupid habit of soldering USB connector to the drive, so it can't be used as a normal SATA drive.

Are they doing that so you can't or is it cheaper to produce?

I've been putting my 'rigs' together for years now. No hard drive manufacturer has stood out as a clear winner. I've had just about every brand of HDD fail on me after some time. Plextor, Memorex, WD, Seagate, you NAME it, one or two has always failed after a certain period of time. This is just part of the law that comes with mechanical/electronic things. Even NASA has issues...then again that's a whole diff topic, sorry!

With that said, I don't think this deal is anything special. Considering my above statement and my personal experience, I've had a 3TB Seagate GoFlex 3.0 USB drive (not popular, I know), for quite a while now that I grabbed for around $120 ($40/per TB, needs to be plugged in to an external power source). It works fine and has been flawless, even after being banged around. How long will it really last? Who knows?

It seems impossible these days to measure the reliability from any of these manufacturers.

With all that put aside, my longest running drive is a WD 10k rpm Raptor from years ago, still running strong after thousands of hours. Does that mean it's any better than the rest? Not really, as I've had the same drive die on me after a few months. I think I just got lucky with the one. It's like buying a car. Sometimes a 20k car will be in the shop less than a 50k car. It all depends. So many variables. Temps, use, other things I probably don't even know of not being an engineer or whatever.

Don't really know, must be more expensive to produce, SATA technology is quite polished at this point, so my guess is they are trying to prevent ppl from using their external drives as internal, segmenting the market.

Call the # on the back of the card, dial 0, then dial 5 (find the one for customer service, i may remember wrong the digits though)
talk the rep and request for check kindly.

I've recycled more than $1500 in AMEX rebate cards this way. hope it helps

BTW, good deal, OP! repped
