I have been looking for the best deal on a Windows tablet and came across these guys on Viewsonic's factory store:

Viewsonic Viewpad 10pi Windows 7 Tablet - $299
http://www.viewsonic.com/us/table...-10pi.html

Viewsonic Viewpad 10pi Windows 7 Ready Tablet - $149
http://www.viewsonic.com/us/table...no-os.html

Viewsonic must be blowing these out, because the cheapest price I could find for the $299 version with Windows 7 pre-installed is $499.99 on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Viewsonic-V...ewpad+10pi

I was able to buy that $39.99 Windows 8 upgrade special from Microsoft before it expired yesterday and was thinking about using that to do a clean install on the $149 version of this Viewsonic 10pi. That would give me a Windows 8 tablet for under $200.

What do you think? Does anyone know of a better deal out there on a Windows tablet?

Besides all that, I'm really liking this thing for what it is. I am triple booting Windows 7, Windows 8, and Android using the VHD method that was posted earlier in the thread. I like the touch interface with Windows 8 quite well, but Windows 7 seems to be working better for me. In Win 7, I am able to play 720p files very smoothly @ 23.976 FPS and pretty smooth (with the occasional hitch/jerk) at 29.970 FPS using Media Player Classic. I tried VLC, but the same videos were choppy. The same files were choppy regardless of what media player I used with Windows 8.

.
I am able to play all my 720p mkv files smoothly under Windows 8 using only the Matrosoka Splitter and Windows Media Player. I really enjoy this aspect of the tablet.

Wow. How did u get that to go to completion? What graphics driver version are you using out of curiosity. Thanks for the stats.
I just run it. Although I have seen the error you have posted about. It tends to finish after a fresh reboot when it's been sitting cool for a while. After it warms up, no go. If it successfully completes and I try to run it again, I definitely get the non completion error. I think this tablet has cooling issues. 3072. Look in the detailed report I posted. The file named 1.jpg. It's all in there.

On my Windows 8 installation, it is using the standard graphics driver currently and when I ran Windows Update multiple times it did not find the driver for VGA.

Of course, like I said my installation is pretty F'ed. I'll be doing a clean install of Windows 8 shortly. Smilie

I ran the WEI again with the 3080 driver. It's a tad bit slower than the 3072 driver. I couldn't be bothered to hook up a keyboard to do a screenshot so only the detailed print out this time.

It's a kit for IDE/SATA to usb drives so I'm guessing 12V to the drive. Not powering of USB, if that's what you are asking.

I got rid of Android, but it works in 8 so I know it's working properly. The BIOS just can't see the drive. I may try to use unetbootin to put the image on the flash drive tonight. That helped when I tried Debian.
The reason I ask is because there is a correct power up sequence you need to follow. The drive should always be fully powered before you plug it in. However, if your cable does not identify itself as a mass storage device, then I do not think booting from it will work. If you have not successfully done so on another device before, then that may be the issue.

About the usb drive install, jolicloud has a dedicated bootable usb creator which you could try: http://help.jolicloud.com/entries/231051#windows. Or, you could try using their windows installer to install from within windows.

If that still doesn't work, then the possibility exists that they may not currently support this hardware.

Thanks!

I was curious about the Windows performance index so I threw on a copy of Windows 7 and ran it myself. It's only slightly worse than my netbook, which I use for about 90 percent of my programming. (And yes, I know that's weird, especially since my more powerful computers just sit around collecting dust most of the time, but that's how I work and I like it!)

Windows 7 is actually running perfectly for me. I have noticed the issue with the top middle part of the screen not responding well to touch, but so far that's the only issue. Well, I guess the onboard keyboard does pop up at odd times.

I'll probably keep Windows on it until I have time to build the kernel and install Slackware next week. Even though it's not my style, Android irritates me even worse. Smilie

Got windows 8 installed and it all works really well, including the WiFi. Netflix app runs smoothly too. Is there an hdmi adapter available?

Any way to make onscreen keyboard bigger?

Did you use the wifi hack in wiki? I opened the unit and noticed that the wifi does not have the antenna attached, which surprised me (I might be wrong on this). Is antenna necessary for wifi unit? The reason I asked this because I installed a half mini wireless card in the e3G slot and the range is very limited. I did not install the wifi antenna yet. I did wipe out the whole SSD and did a clean Window 8 pro install. Comments?

I had to use the hack. The first time I installed W8, the WiFi would cut out after a few mins as reported by others. This second time though, it's a rock. It works perfectly. Windows Update doesn't seem to work though. I'm stuck on Downloading Updates but nothing ever downloads. If I bring up the browser, the WiFi is working though.

Overall, W7 runs better than W8 for me. Hulu and Youtube are almost watchable under W7. Under W8 they are too choppy. Under W7, it's clearly still dropping frames but not as badly. The showshopper under W7 for me is that once the screen blanks due to no activity, I can't get it to come back on. I have to hold the power switch to turn it off and then reboot. I think others have reported the same. That's a showstopper.

Installing VS and Eclipse now. If it can't run those reasonably, it's RMA time.

There is no video out, so no adapter is possible Big Grin

I wonder what the dock has though.

Just got Eclipse installed. Took a while. Just extracting the zip file took forever, about 10 mins. The same on my laptop takes about 2 seconds. The good news is that it does run OK. It takes a long time for it to load, but once it's loaded it's reasonable. Using the touchscreen with it is not fun. Just hitting the run button is a lesson in frustration. A keyboard/mouse is definitely needed. It can mostly keep up typing with one finger using the onscreen keyboard. It stutters at times. It lags behind typing on my USB keyboard. Everything does seem to work in a quick hello world app.

Does anyone know how to resolve the wake from sleep issue in Windows 7? Windows 8 seems sluggish compared to Windows 7 for me. W8 does wake from sleep when I use the slider while W7 requires a full reboot.

Windows 8 update takes a really long time to be done, it stuck at 0 for me for half an hour or so. But at the end, I got everything updated.
I got this same issue on Asus S200E.

Off topic: Harry, how do you like S200E?
I had one and got myself Lenovo Yoga 13 instead as my main laptop.

If anyone is looking for a cheap case that fits the 10pi, I just got this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004YIFODW

The 10pi is a tiny bit wider, but the tabs can be bent just slightly to accomodate. Otherwise the case is almost a perfect fit. It's not the world's greatest case, but for $5.80 shipped (with prime) it's a good deal. Beware, though. Cheap materials and the corners are exposed, so it's not going to protect the tablet from a edge drop. It will work for me to keep the tablet safe in a bag, though, so that's what I wanted. the ability to prop the tablet up in both landscape and portrait (my preferrence) is a huge plus. I'll try to post a little video of it in a bit. (BTW- one of the reviewers claims this case weighs a pound. He's smoking something).

**forgot to mention: the tabs cover the volume/home/back buttons. I don't use them since this machine is windows 8 only for me, but if you use android you probably don't want this case.

Perfect timing! Another item in my cart has lowered the price by $5, so this case is going to be almost free for me.

Kensington is nicer though Big Grin
