Switching my internet to Cable from DSL, will the SB6141 modem work with Optimum?

xNico 1,500 846 February 11, 2013 at 12:59 AM
I'm paying 29.99 for 4 mbs speed from verizon and once the month expires I'll be switching it to Optimum Online that is almost 3 times the speed for the same price. I've heard a lot of good reviews for the motorola SB61xx series and was wondering if it works for Optimum Online. I know it works for TWC, Roadrunner and Comcast, but I can't find any computability info about it for Optimum.

The plan I'm signing up for say they also include a modem during the installation which costs 19.99. Would it be possible to just buy the modem stated and do a self install?

TIA!

I am a little confused. Optimum looks like it's a cable system. You said you have DSL now, the SB6141 is a cable modem. My guess is it will technically work with the new system but you should really ask Optimum they should be able to answer your questions. DSLReports.com might be another good resource for you. They are kind of a forum for all types of ISP.

I confirmed it with a optimum rep, since it's a cable modem it does work. Had a feeling it'd work, just wanted to make sure, guess I'm making the switch Smilie. Thanks

Good. The switching part of your question was irrelevant. Simply put, Will modem X work with ISP Y.

I have optimum and they give you some lousy modems. Thanks for confirming that sb6141 will work. Newegg has a deal with a free router. I will be selling the router since I have a asus router and its a beast. Thanks again for confirming.

you do know you won't save any money for using your own modem, right?

I love their Arris modem.

I was able to get 50 mbps/1 year no contract for 44.95, was gonna go for the 29.95 for 15 mbps but i went decided to pay a bit more for almost 4x the speed, and with the sb6141 i'm expecting speeds past 50 mbps. drool

Does Optimum not charge a lease fee for the modem? I know Comcast does ($7 per month I think) which is why I bought my own modem.

They might not. When I signed up for Cox's phone service, they replaced my cable modem with their own Motorola integrated cable modem/voice gateway. No charge.

Steve Gibson on password policies [grc.com]: I mean, I don't get this change it every eight weeks. ... It's not as if passwords are traveling by camel after they've been stolen, going to the bad guys, and so there's, like, some weird eight-week window, like, oh, we're going to change your password so that the stale password no longer works. ... And all this does is make IT people despised because users, who are not dumb, they think, why am I - why do I have to do this? What problem is this solving?

Modem is free. I was given the all new Arris Tm822 modem and the guy did a speed test that gave 65 Mbps! instead of the stated UP TO 50 mbps. Ridiculous speeds, I even went ahead and ordered the Moto Sb6141 ahead of time..guess i'll just deny the shipping or something from ebay instead..
