Difference between Asus Transformer TF201 and TF300??

Geronemo3 918 57 February 11, 2013 at 01:01 AM
Hi.
I've been looking to get a deal on gently used TF300 and this whole time i was thinking that the TF201 is an inferior tablet.
Recently I checked the specs and they are spot on with TF300, both using 1GB Ram, Tegra 3 processor, 1280x800 display I think.

TF201 from my understanding was released in late 2011 and TF300 is early 2012.
So what's the difference between the 2 tablets??

Which one should I be looking for and what price point should I bo looking if buying used ones?

Thanks for the help guys Smilie

Asus Transformer Pad TF300 vs Transformer Prime TF201 comparison [youtube.com]

TF201:
Metal case
Lighter, thinner
Super IPS+ display (bright!)
1.3GHz Tegra 3
Had GPS issues.

TF300
Plastic case
Heavier, thicker
IPS display
1.2GHz Tegra 3
No GPS Issues.

The TF300 is an updated and cheaper to produce version of the TF201.

The TF201 was a mid year release. They are somewhat hopping around with their numbers but the TF101, TF300 and now the TF600 and TF700 are the big ones. They skipped all the stuff in the middle.

The TF201 (Prime) was looked at as a step up from the TF101 trying to get by with swapping out pieces. The TF300 was looked at as a full on second generation upgrade from the TF101.

Buy the tf300 and set the developer setting to zero background process if this tablet seem slow. The tf300 has the bestwif i signal due to its plastic casing.

The early tf201 had serious wifi/GPS issues due to the full metal casing. It hard to say if Asus redesigned the tf201 in newer model, but I avoid the tf201 for now.

Both have custom docking keyboards and relatively slow ssd to keep cost down. You can get a tf300 for around 279.99 32gb used amazon warehouse and new 16gb 299.99 on sale monthly.

The TF201 is a premium tablet that suffered from lousy testing of the GPS prior to release. Hold the TF201 in your hands, and then hold the TF300 and you'll understand the difference. The TF201 just feels so much better. It's all top notch materials in the slimmest design possible. The TF300 feels like any other, chunky, plastic android tablet. Now there's no denying that the Prime screwed up the GPS by using a full metal casing, but how many people will use a 10", Wifi-only tablet as a navigation device?

The TF201 isn't "premium" any more since the introduction of the TF700 and TF600. The TF201 poor house wifi performance is a deal breaker for a wifi only device. Your get good wifi signal if your in the same room with the wireless router. :]

In those other pics you posted, that is a bluetooth keyboard. Be weary of that because with a BT KB you will not get the added battery life AND you will have to charge the dang thing.

For $400...you can get the TF600T brand new if you have a Microcenter near by.

I have discarded the above one from my list because of the reasons u mentioned.

$400 is a little out of my budget at the moment. I am looking for android because it suits my present needs and I can afford it.

Newegg has TF300 16gb refurb for $260. Do you guys think that's a good deal?

Yes. I do if you are going just the tablet. (If you are going for the Keyboard though at $360 for the package, might as well get the newest model for $40 more.)

You sound like you have put in your research, but just as a note if you have never had a tablet before...Android on a Tablet =/= Android on a Phone. There are not very many apps made for the tablet, most will stretch but there is a fair amount that won't even work at all. IPT (on the boards here) is one of the biggest Android guys here and he'll tell you the same thing.

There are no other options for a 10" tablet for that cheap, but just so go into it with curbed expectations.

We got the TF101 with Dock in hopes to be a laptop replacement, and it was anything but. It is a great consumption device, but my wife wanted something to also use for school and it failed miserably there. My mom uses her TF101 as a Facebook/Pinterest/All that jazz device and loves every single second of it.

I know the computing power of these tablet is jack compared to PCs.
My 4 yr old Dual Core laptop handles that ok for now.

I am just looking for a device where I can watch videos, movies from my server and browse websites, read email and check out forums etc etc.
I would have bought the Nexus 7 long time ago but it doesn't have expandable memory or MHL two things I wanted in a tablet, therefore I started looking into the TF300 and also the Tab 2 7.0, but from what I have read Tab 2 has T.I. 1Ghz dual core which might be a slow processor for a tablet.

My phones (Gnex) 4.5" screen in too small to do all that, that's the only reason I am looking into these.
