DEAD/OOS

Was walking though Target yesterday and noticed the Westinghouse 50" LED 1080p 60Hz TV [target.com] was on limited clearance for $299.99 (reg $599.99 previous sales for $499.99)

Talked to the guy at the tech department and while there were none out front he said there were a few in the back and the deal was live (Sawmill Rd/Dublin OH location)

Might be worth checking out to see if other stores had the same offer

1. It is a law that mandates you have car insurance, even though most will never use it.

2. Obama will mandate that you have to have health insurance, even though some will never use it.

3. Extended warranties will never be mandated to buy, but brainless people like yourself will still buy them, even though you will probably never use it.

why did I know you'd be anti Obama?

Take a photo of the bar code with your phone. Scan yourself. That is how I do it.

Bought one today in San Bernardino, CA for 299.99. Price was 399.99, however North Apple Valley store has it priced at 299.99. Note this is NOT a clearance price. I repeat NOT a clearance price, it as an active sale price. Because it is an active sale the managers should price match accordingly. Apple Valley store in my area has the TV for 299.99 however they are out if stock. I went to a store that had 3 and asked the manager if they would price match active sales from different stores. He said it would not be a problem and called to verify the price at the Apple Valley target. Good luck to you all!

What do you mean by "Torch Mode"? I checked the settings and mine says "EnergySaving Mode".

Where can I find calibration specs for the tv?
Its what they use in stores to make it brighter etc (think of demo mode).

I played with this set and did some basic calibration tests on a PC. Some quick notes:

- On the default settings, all the colors are super-saturated to the point of clipping. You will do yourself a big favor by turning the color control down.

- There is definitely a blue-red tint. This is because the green channel plateaus earlier than the red and blue. It would be more correct to say that the set is green-weak. This can be ameliorated somewhat by turning the color down to reduce saturation.

- Gamma is all over the map and is hard to adjust because of the dynamic contrast feature of the TV. It is difficult to get settings that look good in dark scenes to also look good in bright scenes.

- The set does seem to have a limited color gamut which manifests itself with obvious blocking and banding. On high bandwidth HD video like Blu-ray, it is less apparent but gives the picture a grainy appearance.
Can you share your specific calibration settings and save me some time. TIA!

I don't understand the anti-warranty posts. I'm not 'brainless' for wanting to protect myself. Although I felt brainless when I had a big screen TV die on me and I had no warranty a few years ago. Laptops drop off counters, phones drop into water....things happen.

I've made strategic decisions of what I will warranty; I always research and try to know in advance the chances of what and when things go wrong (according to reviews). Then I figure in how much I spent in the first place.

I have made 4 claims and been very relieved to have had the ability to do so.

Statistics be damned, My situations are apparently different than those statistics.

And if you spent 40 bucks on a monitor/spent 8 dollars on a warranty/got a 40 dollar gift card back....then read what your signing. No plan will usually ever give you back more than what you initially spent. Being out 8 dollars is better than being out 40 dollars IMO.

Picked one up yesterday for $299 in Bay Shore NY. No issues at the store... the TV came up on the workers handheld inventory machine thing (gave him the item number and he punched it in- none on the sales floor just 2 in the back). Great deal on an extra TV that Im going to use for my soon to be born daughter to watch cartoons and stuff. going to put it in my den by mounting it to the wall. Baby is due April 2nd so I probably wont install for a little bit.

What calibration settings? Do you actual have the TV? There are no numbers on the various sliders to reference. And, when using HDMI, you can only adjust Brightness, Contrast, and Color. That is the problem.

I was able to calibrate and make adjustments through my video card driver using test images. Adjusting the source in this way can make the picture much better than stock, but still cannot completely compensate for its problems with color accuracy(*).

On the TV itself, the only thing I found that will guarantee a better picture is reducing the color setting (say 20%). Increasing the brightness a little and decreasing the contrast a little may provide some benefit, but not nearly as much as reducing the saturation.

(*) Color accuracy is possibly the wrong term. The set has an inability to display certain shades.
