I want to wash because of smell, not stain. I do have "dust mite" covers on them, but they still tend to become "smelly" over time.
If your just trying to remove odors, then you might want to try a dryel dry cleaning bag ( you can find them at most stores near the laundry detergent.) You just throw that in the dryer. I have used them before, not on pillows, but my clothes always seem to smell fresh.
