SOLVED -- windows firewall error 0x8007042c

Has anybody encountered this error before? It won't let me turn my firewall on.

I've done some googling and none of the fixes suggested work, nor does MS Fixit.

I've run virus scans, MBAM, even Norton Power Eraser. Nothing is found. I ran SFC as well, and again nothing was found.

One thing of note is that when I tried manually starting the services suggested on the MS kb [microsoft.com] page, they would fail to start and give me an error as well.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks!

Services
(scroll down to) Windows Firewall ->
double click Windows Firewall ->
click Log On Tab ->
select This Account ->
Browse for LOCAL SERVICE user (Advanced -> Find Now -> LOCAL SERVICE) ->
Leave the password field blank

Apply the changes. Reboot.

If the Microsoft Fixit didn't work as well as the manual methods, have you considered a System Restore?

Yeah. I'm trying to avoid that. I actually have no idea when the problem started, so I don't know how far back to restore. I was thinking of just reinstalling windows but that means I'll have to do a lot of backing up. Hence, hoping to solve it this way.

Yeah that was the other option if System Restore was not an option. Windows Firewall is so integrated into Windows that if it hoses up then either use the manual/automatic fixes, re-image, System Restore, or reinstall. Never can tell until you go through it all.

you may want to run an offline scan using sophos or similar tool and did you check the event viewer for errors?

didn't know about this program. quite a dandy. Only killed one process and it didn't help, but thanks. I can see me using this in the future.

Tried sophos (didn't know about this -- thanks) but it came back empty. Appreciate the effort.

Holy carp, I found a solution.

http://lifeofageekadmin.com/windo...80070424c/

Apparently my registry keys got corrupted. (perhaps a malware infection in the past.) Downloaded the ones from that site and entered them and the processes started right back up!

Thanks to all for your suggestions. Learned a bunch of neat programs and a lot about services and registry settings in this little misadventure.

Awesome! I'm keeping that little bit of information archived for future reference. Oh that wacky Windows laugh out loud
