I think the plan was to roll out apps for the router and your phone. The problem is they are all just variations of what the main app does, nothing really all that different. Now that belkin has bought linksys I wouldn't expect anything new. It works as is, but if someone comes up with a cool idea I doubt belkin or cisco will put in the time to add it. Linksys made a stupid move by moving away from custom firmware to this cloud BS. Then they hired a marketing company that pumped up the brand name and "updated" packaging so cisco could liquidate the brand name.
The thing I find really stupid is that linksys made an AC router and then never made an AC adapter.
I have this router with the ac bridge to boost the hd video streaming of netflix, vudu, amz video and youtube on my vizio app tv and googletv. Yes, both of these devices have wi-fi, but the ac bridge connected to the devices via ethernet port is much better wireless connection. I can run vudu HDX wtih no issues. If I use the wi-fi built into the tv or googletv device, then I can only get HD. I think the wi-fi built into the devices has low grade antenna and bridge has much better antenna to keep up with the HDX video streaming. Overall I like this ac router + bridge and the apps. The free app from Linksys is nice to use for monitoring of router from iphone. But I am not big fan of going into router config all of the time, have other interests to put my time into, so I like the auto pilot approach that takes less IT knowledge. Just make my devices and content work will with router and I am good to go.
A new one is $185 delivered from Amazon. Better still is the ASUS ASUS RT-AC66U for $193 or so.
Agreed, I just bought an Asus RT-AC66U and the range is excellent. I had a Buffalo WZR-D1800H which had horrible range and terrible multistream Wireless N performance.
The AC66U is head and shoulders above it.
As far as Cisco routers are concerned, I have a bit of a bad taste in my mouth after my Cisco E4200 died without warning 1 month out of warranty and Cisco was unwilling to do anything to help me. I even have the chat transcript from Cisco support. So for now I'm avoiding Cisco Home products. Which is a sad state, considering I'm a network engineer and the vast majority of gear I work with professionally is Cisco... Even went to Cisco Live! this year... but meh, I guess that's what I get for buying essentially a rebranded Linksys.
