Starting march 15th there's going to be a change in the rewards program. Nrw changes include 5% rewards on all items and also you must purchase $30 in ink every 180 days to get recycling rewards.

Cheap how? The lowest priced cartridge or ink that comes closest to but goes over $30? HP 564 cartridges can be had for $8.49.
Last time when I calculated it, I needed to buy 7 cartridges. So if I buy 7 inks to get it to $30, I then can recycle those cartridges too.

I searched this thread but didn't see the post I had seen previously where someone had posted a link for the most popular/most used inks at staples. It was to help choose ink if someone wanted to resell on ebay.

http://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=58766342&postcount=1363 Amazon not Staples. If you are looking for specific ink just put "HP" in "Search this thread".

Well, that's the end of that freebie. I have one HP laser printer and only need a new toner cartridge once a year or so. Let's see: $100 at Staples vs. $13 on eBay. No brainer, really. Problem is a technologically-challenged friend (no computer, no cell phone) who obtained about 100 out of date ink cartridges from an office he's cleaning out. We were splitting the $20/month. He's really ticked off now.
Just spent my last reward money on the $5 Folger's coffee deal.
I looked at Office Depot for a similar program, but it seemed like the rewards would only be good on certain items. Am I missing something?

Don't know about OM, but at OD, one can recycle a maximum of 10 cartridges monthly @$2 and earn $60 quarterly after making qualifying purchases for that amount or more. Like many others, I have been satisfying that spend requirement through FARew puchases or (less frequently in 2013) FAR software. The quarterly rewards can be used on almost anything in my experience, including stamps. There are a few exclusions ("any type of prepaid gift, merchandise, debit, phone, service or other stored value card or device").

Thanks for the clarification. At this point in my life I really don't need much of anything from Staples or OD. And since I have to give half of what I get in rewards to someone else IN CASH, really doesn't work for me.

I recycled earlier this month but am purchasing the $30 of ink today. Will the recycling I did earlier during the month count?

Or does recycling have to be done AFTER ink is purchased.

When was the last time you bought $30 in ink? You must have purchased $30+ in ink in the previous 180 days to have your ink carts qualified. If you have not purchased $30 in ink in the previous 180 and recycled you will not be getting credit. You can buy now and then contact Rewards to get cart credit. AFAIK this is being done as a courtesy and is possibly a one-time event. You'd have to check some prior posts in this thread for the details.

Didn't see anything in the wiki about this. Can anyone confirm this?

Can we qualify for $30 of ink/toner purchases by using rewards? Or does it have to be out-of-pocket expense? I have some ink to recycle and some rewards to use.

To qualify for ink recycling, you need to spend $30 OOP in ink purchases, net of rewards, coupons, and other discounts; e.g. ink subtotal = $80, you pay with $20 in rewards, $10 in coupons and $50 in cash or cash equivalent.
