Update: Deal is now live, promoted on the Starbucks website [starbucks.com]:
Got a Starbucks gift card? Get $5 free when you join our loyalty program by 3/14.

We’ll give you $5 to register your card and join My Starbucks Rewards. Ends March 14 (new members only). [starbucks.com]
Starbucks will be offering a $5 credit when you register a card for the first time on a new Starbucks Rewards account [starbucks.com]. The promotion is set to run from February 28 through March 14, 2013.

So far, the promotion has not been publicly communicated by Starbucks corporate, but some stores tipped the offer last weekend during the now-expired promotion to receive a free $5 gift card with in-store purchase of whole bean coffee 1-lb. bag. (See images of informal in-store signage here and here.)

The details of the $5 bonus offer are still sketchy at the moment, but I verified the information at a couple local stores. One barista advised me of the upcoming promo when I bought a bag of coffee over the weekend. When I asked a barista at another store, he was unfamiliar with the upcoming offer, but after consulting a book behind the counter, he confirmed the promotion would be offered from Feb 28 through Mar 14.

I also contacted customer service via the Starbucks website to inquire about the promotion, and received the following reply via e-mail:
Quote :
Thank you for contacting Starbucks, I hope you are having a good day! Yes, we are having a promotion coming up where you can get a $5.00 credit if you are a brand new starbucks customer registering your card for the first time. The $5.00 credit should be added to the card up to 72 hours after your card has been registered.
Thanks again for writing us. If you ever have any questions or concerns in the future, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Additional details will be posted when they become available.

So, this appears to be a targeted promotion
don't think so. the baristas at both stores i talked to yesterday and earlier today were aware of the promotion. would be nice to be able to see what they send out on their portal...or see something on their site. Big Grin

Just make sure you watch them making the refills.. lol.

Buying 30 scones won't give 30 stars?

So, the choice now is:
1. Buy stuff/GC to earn stars to be gold... then keep doing until free drinks/food
2. Buy 1lb coffee separate transactions to get $5 GC, then maybe return with gift receipt?
(Hopefully, they won't pre-track the $5 GC so they'll have an idea where it goes and what it does)
3. I never got those $ off or free machiatto in my app/rewards
4. what else? (haven't kept up, been working)
buying scones in 30 seperate transactions wont give you stars?

I'm pretty sure this isn't true. I asked a barista on how to get stars for gold.. he said just buy scones for each transaction.

Maybe I should cash out 3 cards ( 10$) and then buy a new gift card with 30 bucks and register it. then buy 30 scones. legit card, legit money, no way of being nuked.

That would be great. I guess I'll just need to check out a store tomorrow to find out.

depends on the roast....$11.95+ and i think the high end stuff is $30. a box of pods is $11.95 for coffee and 12.95 for latte. Big Grin

Well the whole point was to end up with one physical GC with a lot of credit because you seem to need a physical GC when selling these online now. Since all the credit was on a GC on my app, never on a physical card, I needed to buy a physical card.
I think the best denomination is $20 or $50 for resell as no many buyer of $200.
More works but a better return on investment.

I have never tried one. I just like the sight of hot nursing students eating them.
You should offer them free bananas and watch them eating them.

Quick heads-up.

3 days ago, I balance merged $50 worth of 5's into a $5 pGC registered on one of my main accounts using the online site, while sitting at a starbucks. I did this to test whether or not they are still flagging and deactivating accounts, since it would be alot easier and less awkward if I can do it online to consolidate all my funds vs having to do it at the counter.

As of today, it is still working perfectly. I added another $50, and bought a drink with it to see if it still works. The balance sits at about $101 as of tonight.

I will update in a few days.

Did you unregister the $5 cards before doing this?
Thanks for being the guinea pig. Smilie I appreciate it.

Why not just take all your $5s and put it on one card?

transaction history shows as in store activation.

or just buy some high priced item, return it and get a instore white gift card or a new gift card.

I already explained my reasons in my first post. shake head

Plus, $50 seems safe so far. I'm gonna leave it at ~100 for a few days. If that works, I'm gonna consolidate everything into 50's and 100's.

I wanna see if they are still flagging accounts, by purposely transferring balances using the method that got people flagged at the beginning, which happens to be the method that does not involve making yourself look like an a$$hole at the starbucks you frequent.

I wouldn't really balance merge since there would be multiple balance merges of $10 each.
Your main card would have a huge transaction history on main card.

Or you can activate new gift cards with random amounts.. 25.67, 27,55, 44.85 and it actually would probably help fooling the IT thinking you received a gift card with like a "set" amount of $50 or something , hence you consolidated into a main card.

You still don't understand. I am perfectly aware of what I am doing. Every other way requires me going to the counter and scanning multiple gift cards in order to buy more giftcards, which is awkward as hell.

Like I said.....two times before already, I am doing this to test whether or not they are still flagging accounts at this point. ~$100 is not a big price to pay, if it means I can easily mobilize my small amount cards.

I only had a VERY few cards that got decactivated..

During the very few days of the promo, I spent $500 on $5 gift cards.. no doubt... I look back on all my cards now and they are not nuked it. I guess consolidated $5 gift cards are much safer, not having a higher balance. If we actually had a statistics chart on the most popular amount of $ to load on a gift card in the US.. hmm lets say its probably either $5-$10 or at most, $25 and maybe $50. I would say $50 during christmas, and $5,$10, $25 on any other day.

There are so much $5s that its harder to know which are from the promotion and not..
The transaction history doesn't even say if the card is funded by cash/credit/ or gift card balaance.
