Do Republicans "win" by destroying the reputation of government?

The GOP's Cynical Slog [thedailybeast.com]

Quote :
The legislative branch can invent deadline after deadline after deadline. And with each new one that is hit, two things happen. One, the public gets more and more disgusted with the appearance of incompetence. And two, and somewhat though not completely at odds with this, the public pays a little less attention each time. We're already seeing in polls that people are paying less attention to the sequester than they did to the fiscal cliff, and this seems likely to continue.

All this will hurt Republicans. They know this. But as long as it hurts Obama too, they don't care. Bear in mind here the words of Mike Lofgren, the former GOP congressional staffer who left his party in disgust in 2011. At the time, he wrote a big Goodbye to All That piece where he said the following: "A couple of years ago, a Republican committee staff director told me candidly (and proudly) what the method was to all this obstruction and disruption. Should Republicans succeed in obstructing the Senate from doing its job, it would further lower Congress's generic favorability rating among the American people. By sabotaging the reputation of an institution of government, the party that is programmatically against government would come out the relative winner."

In sum, this is going to go on indefinitely. It suits the long-term GOP strategy to take some hits as long as Obama is taking them too.
If one Party wants smaller government, can they win power by destroying the reputation of government and thus justify shrinking it?

Ugly "inner workings" is not equal to a bad result.

MAYBE for sausage, if not eaten in moderation. Stick Out Tongue
True. Did you see the story on processed meat today: http://www.theatlantic.com/health...th/273773/

No, but I've heard it's not pretty. Just like watching Congress do nothing but cause crisis.

You do know that FICA is only levied on the first $106K, right?

Which would amount to a ~$2K tax increase on $1M income or about 0.2%.

The other parts of your rant are similarly false or unsubstantiated opinion.
95 percent of individual people make less than the SS maximum.

Cap gains was raised to 20% from 15% so the ultra wealthy took a huge tax hike this year.

If I appear to be ignoring your posts, it's probably because you are on my ignore list.

Yep. Anything dried or salted would certainly count, which pepperoni is. Like you said, in moderation should be ok Wink As with everything in life. If you are eating enough pizza to take more pepperoni than you should have, you have other problems.

And yet they still pay far, far, far less in taxes than they did 30 years ago, or 20 years ago.

Less in terms of percent of their income? Less in terms of percent of total taxes paid by the top 5%? Less in terms of the percent of the total taxes paid by the top 5% divided by the total income gained by the top 5%? Less in terms of less total inflation corrected dollars?

You are so non-specific I don't even know what your claim is.

that is also quite the cherry-picking - how many people in the U.S. make $1M income?

it's 2% for those who make under $106k, which seems like the majority - yes, not everyone, but quite a few people are affected by more than .2%

the only people destroying the reputation of government are the democrats with their runaway spending, ....
Not a dime can be spent without the approval of the (GOP-controlled) House.

And who has been in control of the House? laugh out loud

Thanks for reminding me of that and bringing smile to my face. I bet this also explains why Mitten and Ann were extra bitter and bitchy in their interview a couple days ago.

Let me see if I get this right. So we have an increase of 2% on all but 2% of people. Hmm....

Hmm.....recall the infamous 47%? Recall the many claims that they do not pay any taxes? Well at least it is now admitted that they pay at least 2% in federal taxes.

I love these moments of accidental/unintended honesty. Smilie

You should recall they were talking about income tax. You know, the ones that get excited about doing their tax returns. $$$$$$

Spin...spin...

Since when did govt have such a great reputation to begin with?

While I admit there are good things it does, its also a pit of graft and corruption as well.
