can anybody shed light on if roku xs or roku 3 will have issues playing mkvs? My video library is mainly mkvs and i currently use a wd media player plus and i only have issues with certain types of wmv's. I heard someone say roku has issues with mkv's so i want to make sure i knew about this before pulling the trigger. Thanks!

Plex FTW

Wrong, the CPU is faster in the 3 vs the 2XS model. The headphone jack in the remote is a cool novelty feature.
It now supports gigabit ethernet, and dual band N wifi.

Is it a huge upgrade over the 2XS? Probably not, but if you don't have one or are using and old roku 1st gen then it's probably a good deal.
I'm very tempted. I have two Roku 2 XS units and a couple older units. I don't need any more, but I love the idea of the faster processor. There is definitely lag on menu and channel switching on my Rokus. I'm afraid if I tried the 3 and loved the increased speed, I'd just be even more bothered by the slower Rokus than I am now.
I'm thinking I'll hold off, but its just so hard! damn you, consumerism!

I'm in the same boat, I just discovered that the VUDU channel won't work on this old box so I think it's time for an upgrade.

One more small change- they added weight, so the hdmi connecting it no longer weighs more than it.

Audio remote may be novelty but was made for me. Wife and I are constantly in the same room, one of us watching something on the iPad or laptop, the other TV using the Roku. Plus now when she falls asleep on the couch I don't have to worry about waking her when I watch loud action movies.

On this note, if anyone knows of a good media player that can handle 1080p MKVs with subtitles let me know. As far as I'm aware there's nothing out there aside from a HTPC that can handle that right now, and I'd love to be proven wrong.

You need around a tegra 3. The Ouya console coming out should be able to handle it easily.

I'm holding out myself for that. All these media streamers have 2-year old smartphone tech inside them. Single core in this day and age? Yeah right.

Dual band wireless for Roku 3 vs. single band XS.
This.

I have been searching for a good solution that I could use on my 5 GHz band. And the Roku 3 might just be the item that addresses that need.

my old ass Patriot Box Office handles 1080p MKV's with subtitles like a champ.

Faster processor is only thing I see that is really an upgrade.

The new menus will be on Roku 2 HD and up models in late April/Early May.

They took the external audio jack off the actual box which was great for separate external speakers and added it to the remote for headphones. Why couldn't they keep the one on the box AND add the one to the remote?

Just not enough improvement for me to ditch my 2 XS.

Does this version of Roku also carry industry leading "3 months" warranty? My roku 2 stopped working on the 4th month and I was left hi n dry.

USB Media Formats: Video: MP4 (H.264), MKV (H.264) Audio: AAC, MP3, Image: JPG, PNG

For those wondering, yes MKV is supported. Good news too as a lot of my stuff is in that format. I would assume AVIs work but it didn't mention it. Regardless, Plex is also an option. I've had good luck with that with my XS.
I'll probably upgrade though. The speed bump in the processor and the better wifi would make a big difference for me I think.

I have three boxes and never had one die. That said I always buy a squaretrade 3 year warranty.

You can get it for around 10 or 11 bucks with 30% off code. Highly recommended.

FYI, this filler delays shipping (already slow boat for free option) until Tuesday. With some searching, I found one cheaper that shipped today but it has sold out so I can't share it. Sorry. Thanks OP, repped, was going to buy anyway... You saved me about $20 with tax and discount code.
