I don't follow. How would you use Plex with this box? I have tons of movies on a NAS drive that I want to see on my living room tv. I know WDTV is a choice but if Roku can make them available then I have streaming + home media
http://www.plexapp.com/

You download the software for your computer and then get the channel for Roku.

I've looked in multiple places and I don't see anything about lossless HD audio playback. I assume it won't do it?

Are the 750+ channels you watch on Roku free?

Is there any list if they are free or paid or some free some paid.

I have three boxes and never had one die. That said I always buy a squaretrade 3 year warranty.

You can get it for around 10 or 11 bucks with 30% off code. Highly recommended.
I agree. I also have purchased inexpensive Squaretrade warranties for both of my Roku boxes. There's always a promo code out.

can anybody shed light on if roku xs or roku 3 will have issues playing mkvs? My video library is mainly mkvs and i currently use a wd media player plus and i only have issues with certain types of wmv's. I heard someone say roku has issues with mkv's so i want to make sure i knew about this before pulling the trigger. Thanks!

Plex FTW
I got the 3 yesterday to replace my XS. It's day and night difference not just in the menu but starting videos as well. I can play 1080p 20mbps no issue with roku 3 and takes less than 10seconds to get started where as the XS will take 45seconds +.

Good to hear! Do you have Playon? Curious as to how Playon streams with the Roku 3 vs. the XS.

Good to know about the new menu upgrade.

Are you talking about the RCA cable port on the Roku? Didn't even realize you could just use that as a headphone jack. It works though. I guess you'll have to have headphones that you can raise and lower the volume on though, otherwise you'll be stuck with the same volume. I guess the Roku 3 remote has volume buttons.
No, I'm talking about the audio jack on the 2XS. It is AV out. (mini-jack).

On two of the three XS I own, they are in small rooms with 40" tvs. So I use external Computer Speakers with a small sub-woofer for sound with those TV's.

Doing this is cheaper than a bar speaker and IMO sounds way better for less than half the cost. Trick is finding computer speakers with a wireless remote.

Btw - nice deal. Saw this came out and totally want it...but I can't really make a good argument as to why I should upgrade.

Maybe give my XS to my parents?
This is half of my excuse - give old Roku to parents. We decided to upgrade b/c of the audio jack in the remote. He can watch in bed while I sleep. Sure, we could have bought wireless headphones a while ago but this just makes it a little more convenient. Hopefully.

Thanks and repped OP!

Just picked up one to replace an XS box. I am glad they added the dual-band feature back after they ditched it with the Roku 2 model. Looking forward to going back to the 5.0 N band and the faster processor!

Some are paid. 750+ sounds good but actually many of the free sucks. I have had roku for over a year and just stating my opinion... Mainly use the paid ones

On this note, if anyone knows of a good media player that can handle 1080p MKVs with subtitles let me know. As far as I'm aware there's nothing out there aside from a HTPC that can handle that right now, and I'd love to be proven wrong.
Lots of replies but I will add one more - Popcornhour products play MKV with subtitle great. The only thing mine lacks as it was an early A110 model is a native interface that works well cataloging my Movie on a NAS. I went to Roku with Plex and have been pleased. The only thing is that once I moved the Plex server to my NAS to run natively, the NAS processor doesn't do transcoding very well. I wonder if this upgraded Roku will eliminate the need for transcoding and allow better Direct Play support!

Does the USB port play files with DTS or avi files?

USB Media Formats: Video: MP4 (H.264), MKV (H.264) Audio: AAC, MP3, Image: JPG, PNG

For those wondering, yes MKV is supported. Good news too as a lot of my stuff is in that format. I would assume AVIs work but it didn't mention it. Regardless, Plex is also an option. I've had good luck with that with my XS.
I'll probably upgrade though. The speed bump in the processor and the better wifi would make a big difference for me I think.
That really wasn't the question though. Most of these players support MKV, but don't work as well as they should (multiple audio streams, DTS, subtitles, etc, etc). Not all MKVs are H.264 BTW, it depends on how they're created. For example, if you just convert using something like MakeMKV then it just puts the video into a MKV container without changing the format at all; if the source material is VC-1 or MPEG-4/2, then it leaves it as is. I generally use Handbrake to convert movies into H.264 MKVs, but not everyone does.

Does anyone know if this one has any improvements or previous models, specifically DTS audio from MKVs (that's what most of my HD MKVs have)?

Can anyone comment on the quality of the new remote control? The remote on my Roku 2 HD is the biggest POS; from day one, I have to hit a button 3, 4, 5, 6 times for it to register once.

I probably should have returned the device since the free content isn't worth the battle with the remote control--and it's really only the free content (IMO) that is better than the other players on the market (I can get the paid channels via my BluRay which has a faster processor, better UI, and functional remote..
