You cannot purchase a SquareTrade warranty for this since it is a refurbished laptop.

Can someone also post the OEM one and their opinion please? Here it is on Lenovo's website [lenovo.com]. Googling it shows mixed reviews. Thanks in advance. (I'm not sure which to get in regards to comment above). Thanks in advance as well!

Known Issues (and Fixes) - created by jnads
Touchpad not disabling when switching to tablet mode: Re-install the Synaptics driver from the Lenovo website. This is special functionality specifically for this laptop (the driver on the Lenovo site is CUSTOM) and Windows update tends to replace the driver (screwing everything up). I believe you only have to do this once, unless another driver comes out. Alternatively, follow the guide above to install the old driver with the new functionality.

Software keyboard appears, then disappears: Go into Metro and open the Lenovo Companion App. Click the Apps for Ideapad box. Re-install Lenovo Transition. When your device changes states, it will intelligently open the software keyboard as necessary.

Tabet Mode is slow:
-Lenovo under-clocks the processor to 800Mhz in Tablet Mode to keep the heat low. If you don't want this, do one of the following:
-Uninstall Intel Thermal Framework in Remove Programs. Removing this will prevent it from doing that. I haven't done this, so I don't know if it's recommended. I did do the following:
-Alternatively, Hold POWER Down for 10 seconds to COMPLETELY turn off the computer. Start it up and hit F2 to Enter BIOS, switch to 2nd page, disable DPTF, save and exit. I haven't done any benchmarking to verify this works. <--DOES NOT WORK.

C Drive isn't showing all my space:
Lenovo partitions the SSD funky. A 128GB SSD is technically 119GB Usable space. They save 19 GB for a re-install partition (so you can use Lenovo OneKey to wipe the laptop). D drive is a partition to make user-backups (Ghost Images), which is a giant waste.
-Run the partition app up top, which will combine C and D drives. You should get 100GB. I wouldn't re-format the entire drive, because there are still some apps bundled with the laptop that are not on the Lenovo site. There aren't any guides yet for completely reinstalling windows with this laptop.

Touchscreen not working after reboot
There's a fix for that (Touch Screen completely not working after reboot):
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaP...131/page/4

Touchscreen occasionally "misses" an input (i.e. you have to click twice)

Quote :
The problem here is either (1) the touch device powers down too quickly, (2) it doesn't power back up fast enough, or (3) a bit of both.

Here's the workaround I used (because this was driving me nuts):

- Open device manager
- Expand Human Interface Devices
At the bottom of the HID list are two devices labeled "USB Input Device" On my system, the one we're concerned with is the second one, so the last item in the list, but just to make sure it's the right one:

- Open the device properties
- Click the Details tab
- In the drop down menu, select Hardware Ids
The one we want will say USB\VID_04F3&PID_000A on the second line

- Move to the Power Management tab
- Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

Please note I do not yet have numbers on the real impact to battery life this change will have.

That said, we're working to figure out the best way to address this, whether it's turning off power management on the device, or dramatically improving how quickly it's able to detect touch activity.
Fan is loud
There can be two issues:
1. Fan could be broken (bearing loud). This would be a grinding sound.
2. Fan could be rubbing on the metal housing inside the case (tick, tick, tick, tick sound.... somewhat common). You could RMA it, or open up the laptop and bend the housing to fix it yourself.
3. Fan spins up too loud too frequently.

Fan Fix for #3 ("fix" doesn't really work for most people, just slows the fan down. Still loud. Lenovo says they'll fix it in the next firmware update)

Windows 8 Install & Optimization Guide for SSDs [overclock.net] - created by localdeals

Any known solution for a missing mouse cursor? You're driver was most likely updated by either MS in one of its updates, or you upgraded beyond the one offered by Lenovo. Check that your Synaptics version ends with *.3. First, uninstall, the driver from the Device Manager, then reboot. Then, install the Lenovo *.3 version. Also, make sure you had not pressed F6 by accident, as that disables your touchpad.

i currently am posting with 5 bars. I am enjoying the touch pad experience. It's not as smooth as an ipad, and i suspect I'll be using the desktop more than metro. I'm still debating about installing something to bring back the start menu like win7 but i want to force myself to keep using metro to give it a real chance.

i miss apps like calendar on my ipad that i cant find in metro. i mean gmail calendar. i refuse to constantly go through a live/microsoft account to get my email/tasks/calendar from gmail.

I am using my Gmail address for my main Microsoft account ID. I did this when I started using windows 8. Not sure you really need to do this, but it makes me feel less like I'm stacking accounts on top of each other and getting 100% sucked into the Microsoft ecosystem with no escape.

I think by just adding your Google account (i.e. from within Mail., open the charms bar), you can select contacts and calendar too, and the info just flows to the metro calendar and contacts app. Works for me.

I am no longer excited about getting mine Frown

Dont worry about some of nit picky people here. I will state this is the greatest screen ever for me on a laptop. I like MBA keyboard better, but it still isi a good keyboard. Win8 in Metro touch mode is really beautiful. MSFT did many dumb things with win 8 but consider the Metro side more of the fun side. Loading MSN which is a website geared to touch also looks great. There are some interesting metro apps right now.

I'm glad you were lucky on this one. The fan noise is a real issue for some of us, however. Can you check your manufacturing date on the bottom?

Also, do you mind getting which BIOS revision you are using? (To do this, there is a small button beside the power button that you press when the machine has been shut down to boot into the BIOS options).

Perhaps we could switch to your revision -- if the revision is the same as what I have, this tells me the fan itself or the sensor triggering it are actually different hardware, and we shouldn't necessarily expect a fix for that.
I will check this next week when I am back from a business trip. I wanted to take the Yoga but I did not have all my apps installed in time for what I needed.

Does anyone here suggest a sd card for the sd slot on this. I saw a suggestion about putting media files like movies etc on a sd card. Is that workable? I know there is an sd card called SDHC. Is that a better card for this? I know the write speeds to SDs are fairly slow. I want ot manage the 128 SSD drive as best possible.

That is true for me too, but for some reason the mail and calendar in metro wasn't working with my gmail account.

SDHC is a capacity extension, just like SDXC. Normal SD cards would only support up to 4GB. SDHC increased this to 32GB. SDXC goes even further.

The other thing SDHC and SDXC added are "class speeds". There's a number with a circle on the card, and that's the minimum speed in MB/sec of the card.

But yeah, you can use an SD card for extra storage. It won't be very fast though. A good SD card is ~30 MB/sec. A good SSD is ~300 MB/sec. But 30 MB/sec will be enough for watching moving from (it may take a while to transfer them to it).

I think Gmail recently eliminated their ActiveSync support.

Make sure you configure with IMAP.

EDIT: Apparently not yet, but you should probably check the set-up just in case.

Honestly, after installing StartIsBack, I find myself ENJOYING using the Metro start menu more!

1. The program lets you hide all the wretched Desktop Apps in the Metro Start Menu (excel and other traditional apps). So then only apps that run in "Full Screen Metro Mode" show up in Metro.

2. I'm enjoy not being forced to use Metro, but I find myself doing the right-side swipe a lot. I have the button on the bottom set to open the StartIsBack Start Menu (go back to the Desktop).

Yeah, I did all the things in the wiki. Thanks for putting that up

Strange thing is, it seems to happen about 2-3 mins after turning on, but then if I put it to sleep and bring it back up, works as it should.

Know of any that will give me the accelerometer readings, so I can check if it's working right?

Edit: I'm pretty sure it's software...or all my sensors are bad. I found an app to see sensor data...works fine for a couple minutes, then all sensor readings just drop out. Maybe a driver just dying or something...
I would fire up Lenovo OneKey and do a system restore. I did when I got mine. See if that fixes things. Also to make sure everything was a "clean slate" when you got it. I don't trust that the low-level tech peons did everything.

Then do some of the stuff in the Wiki. Mainly the Synaptics driver reinstall first, then the Lenovo Transition app re-install.

I got an unit that's dead on arrival. The battery can't be detected, so there's no way to charge it or turn it on with battery. I can turn it on with power plugged in, and it doesn't have wifi or fan problems, but this is such a bummer. It's a really nice laptop...

There is a 1 year warranty, including the battery. Instead of doing an exchange you could send it to the repair depot to have it fixed, if you're happy with how the rest of the unit works.

But then it might not get back before the 30 day return policy expires.

But yeah, otherwise they'll only exchange if they have more in stock.
