Thread Details

Hello,

I am travelling with my wife to Punta Cana on Thursday for a friend's wedding. I'm a Realtor, and this time of year is just not the best time to be out of the country, but so it goes. I'm going to need to make some calls and probably use my iPad while I am there for emails and such. I think the resort (Hard Rock) has WiFi, which will help, but I didn't know if anyone here had some good ideas for cell service.

AT&T has roaming for essentially $2 a minute. I don't foresee spending hours on the phone, but I have things going on here and was trying to figure out some potentially cheaper options for making calls. I figure someone here might have an idea. I have an IPhone, so any ideas would be helpful!

Thanks.

Find a wifi access point and you're all set. A lot of hotels have free wifi in their lobbies, even if you have to pay to use it from your room.

Although there are lots of VOIP and IM apps out there, Skype is one of the easiest. You can make free calls to other Skype users or call international phone numbers for pretty cheap. Just connect your phone to wifi and place your call through Skype.

This strategy can be used around the world, and beats paying mobile phone roaming costs. Put your phone into airplane mode to make sure you aren't accidentally roaming.

Thanks for the advice... I saw Skype mentioned in an AT&T forum and that sounded interesting... At least gives me some sort of option.

Thanks!

If you're in good standing with AT&T, see if they will unlock your phone. When you arrive in the foreign country, check out airport shops and local shops for pre-paid phone cards. Should give you a better deal than AT&T.

If AT&T will not unlock your phone, simply search eBay/craigslist for a cheap unlocked GSM phone and go the pre-paid card route.
