It may have a bit of dust up in there somewhere. Does the Brother software have some sort of cleaning method that prints a page to get rid of lines or misalignment? My mother uses a Lexmark inkjet and it has all of that in the software. Also, I have taken a paper towel and put a bit of rubbing alcohol on it and put the ink cartridge on the paper towel to clean it. Sometimes, this will help to remove any dust clogging the port of the cartridge. It's also possible that the printer components could have something defective about them.
Personally, I use and refill my own laser printer. You get much more out of toner but it is much more complex.

Sounds like the heads are clogged. Do a printer clean like previously suggested. It did that likely because you don't use it enough. You should really switch to a laser printer so you dont have to worry about that.
