Is this strong enough to transcode 720p for plex?

720 trancoding... No problem..

(I use Serviio for all DNLA client connectivity primarily though.)

This is an excenelnt system for use as a home server that is real easy on power and has enough CPU to do what it needs to without being slow about it.

Its a great value.

Mine has been loaded with unraid (free) and 9TB and has been quietly running non stop for over a year now.

Great little servers.

There's mods out there that will allow up to 6 drives to be stuffed into this thing.

No according to the FAQ on Plex [plexapp.com] see last question and the list. It will do 480p transcoding but not 720p or higher.

I'm looking for a cheap (NAS) server that will do this too. Anyone have any suggestions?

WHY DO THINGS LIKE THIS GET ON FRONT PAGE?!?!?

This is a huge piece of junk.

Even for the price...I don't understand why anyone would every purchase this..

Thanks but that same list on Plex says that ds212j will not do any transcoding since its ARM based processor.

Anyways, I'm looking for a server that can run Windows HS or at least linux.

If that's true, it's only missing the necessary power by a hair. Any owners able to confirm? Can it be clocked at all?

The same deal was posted a week or two ago and someone posted a link to a forum where someone was able to put synology dms on these thing. Faster than an 1812+.

It runs Plex and WHS just fine. I can watch HD material sent to my Roku in the bedroom or my PC in the living room. Not going to say everything streams 100% correctly all the time of course but at times it's bandwidth in my home that jacks around with it. I will also say it streams just fine when I'm outside the home as well to my iPad, laptop, iPhone and Android devices with no issues.

Transcoding can peg the processor but it seems like that has been reduced a bit with the new transcoder in the latest Plex release along with the updated Plex Roku Channel.
