VPN Gate Overview

VPN Gate Academic Experiment Project is an online service as an academic research at the Graduate School of University of Tsukuba, Japan. The purpose of this research is to expand the knowledge of "Global Distributed Public VPN Relay Servers" .

Why VPN Gate?

You can take three advantages if you use VPN Gate:

You can bypass the government's firewall to browse oversea web sites (e.g. YouTube).
You can camouflage your IP address to hide the source of sending information over Internet.
You can protect use of Wi-Fi with strong encryption.

Unlike existing VPN services, VPN Gate has strong resistance against firewalls.
VPN Gate is free of charge. No user registrations required.

VPN Gate Public VPN Relay Servers

There is a list of Public VPN Relay Servers on the VPN Gate Academic Project Web Site.
Anyone on the Internet can connect a VPN connection to any VPN servers on the list.
No user registrations are required.

Well, yes, but you'd have to connect directly to your work computer, not through one of vpngate's servers. The work computer should be the one you enter when you set up the connection, rather than one of the server's on their list [vpngate.net]. You can still follow their How to Connect guide [vpngate.net].

You could, but... why?

Suppose you live in Texas, and your work's server farm is in say... Chicago. To connect to the servers, usually there is a little here and there, but generally speaking, you'd be connecting from Texas to Chicago (may get routed to LA, SF, DC, NY, etc.. along the way). Now, you're going to connect from Texas to Japan to Chicago. It's going to take a lot more computer stops on your voyage, and it certainly won't speed things up any. That, and all of your information is certainly being indexed and sniffed, worst of all, placed in the hands of a 18-25 year old Japanese computer nerd.

If nothing else, I would think it's pretty safe to use for watching content that is blocked because of country restriction.

it might be good things for US users to break thorough ISP and US government 's censorship for torrents or copyright things
would be good for watching FREE Olympics coverage and BBC's FREE TDF coverage for us in the states that are normally blocked by censorship

Since there are many servers/services they connect to, you would just need to try the different connections and do speed test.
