"I recently got this modem replacing my old DOCSIS 2.0 with this modem's DOCSIS 3.0. Before, with the old modem my speed was 30mbps. After upgrading to this modem it dropped in half to 15mbps. Now I regret I got it. I don't think it's the modem itself I think the cable company has better control over this modem's bandwidth so they are now capping it whereas they were not before."

"I am also having the same experience with SB6141 modem (Provider is Time Warner Cable). Earlier with TWC provided modem, I uses to get 20-25Mbps. After upgrading to SB6141, my speed fluctuates between 0-15mbps (I am on 15Mbps plan)."

"WTF?? I moved from DOCSIS 2.0 to 3.0 and got a speed reduction. Everything else being the same (e.g., upload speed, jitter)"

"Yep, the same thing happened to me as I stated earlier. TWC was not enforcing data speed caps with DOCSIS 2.0 but they are enforcing it with DOCSIS 3.0."

They are clearing this modem out. Don't be fooled by the low price or letters from your cable company encouraging you to change to Docsis 3.0.

If the speed you are getting is more than what you are paying for keep what you have.
Ive read the exact opposite of what you posted.

Im currently on a 2.0 modem. My speed sucks, fluctuating from 4-12 Mbps most of the time, the max I ever got was 22Mbps. I pay for a plan that "up to 15Mbps". Ive read people upgrading to 3.0 and their speed is consistent, sometimes higher than what they pay.

Dont be fooled into thinking they cant cap 2.0, of course they can, they just cap your IP...

You can use this but would have to keep the TW modem also. But they will take off the rental fee if you're only using their modem for phone service.

How sure are you about this, and have you done this yourself? Thanks

What speed are you paying for?
I'm now paying for 50 Mbps, Comcast Blast just recently went from 30 Mbps to 50Mbps. Previously I got a good 24 to 27 and since the upgrade it's been noticeably better at 37. Just wonder if another 13 Mbps is worth the extra money.
Thanks for any advice.

Stop rental fees and if you have bad speeds it should help.

If I was in that situation I would go with 3.0.

Motorola SB6141 would be a good choice if it is supported by your cable company.

I prefer to pay more and try the modem locally so I can return it easily.

They have just started the sale on this modem. There are plenty still available on Newegg. This model should be heading lower but who knows.

The modem i have has an outlet for my phone line too, this one does not. Are there other modems that have phone support? Thanks again

I have been watching the price on this for awhile waiting to upgrade.

I was going to pull the trigger on this even though I never consider rebates anymore). I thought Newegg might be a little better/straight forward about them. After reading the feedback in this thread on Newegg rebates, It just reaffirmed my feelings/stance on rebates.

I just purchased this modem from Amazon for $15 more. $15 is worth the no fuss / no hassle of dealing with Amazon and no rebates.

Yeah, this is the position I am in. I have TWC paying for their Standard Internet which is for 15Mbps down. I have been getting 23-28Mbps in recent tests. I currently have a leased SB5101 that I'm paying $3.50/mo. I want to get rid of that (fee) and had considered SB6121/SB6141, but think I will end up with reduced speeds because I expect them to enforce the 15M limit if I get DOCSIS 3 modem.

So instead, I think my best move is to buy a SB5101/U modem. I see them New on Amazon for $46 and Used/Refurb on eBay for $23, and new on CL for $25-35. I think I'll try to get one of the local new ones on CL.

Now my last concern is if I'll have any problems with TWC connecting it, since I read about the lack of firmware updates. I'm hoping this isn't an issue since TWC says this is a valid modem I can purchase myself (of course they say that about the ones that are reportedly having issues too. hmmm...)

In my experience and from what I've read... issues with "supported" modems are usually with the newer ones. I have a SB5101/U with Comcast and it is one of the most popular and best supported modems. It was actually one of two modem's that Comcast was providing at the time. I would think you would be pretty safe with one of those.

Edit: BTW, I typically get ~35MBps and subscribe to Comcasts Blast Plus (50MBps). Typically 35Mbps is more than enough but during peak times I see things bog down quite a bit. Hoping the 6121 will reduce some of that with the multiple channes/increased BW.

With the DOCSIS 2.0 modems, Time Warner was providing their speed boost feature on most plan. They do not provide this with the DOCSIS 3.0. I've encountered the same thing but knew if would happen during my research phase.

Just an FYI -- I'm on Comcast and they just doubled me to 50 down, 10 up. DOCSIS 2 won't give you 50 down, IIRC.
Yeah, that's the plan I'm on (Blast that recently upgraded to 50Mbps). I had noticed a definite speed boost when running simultaneous downloads after the upgrade, but I didn't think I was getting the full bandwidth. I ran the speed test last night with my DOCSIS 2 modem and sure enough, I'm seeing a bottleneck around 35Mbps.

I've gone with the eBay 6421 route, I figure if I see substantial improvement (i.e. ~1MB/s+), I'll keep it, and if not I'll see it on eBay or CL and not be out much money.

thanks for that useful insightful link! Now I know all the SB6141 on ebay sold at a discount are really used/refurb models since they are all black cases. not worth the risk of warranty denial especially if these have been used heavily by cable company customers and refurbed!
Every single cable modem I've bought in the last 6 years was black, sold at retail, and brand new.

One guy had one tech from Motorola tell him the black ones were used. The tech had no idea what he was talking about. Color is absolutely uncorrelated with new/used.

Now the one thing you do need to look out for is that motorola only warranties retail modems sold by an authorized retailer. So if newegg is authorized, then this is a new unit and carries a new unit warranty.
