Question re: WSJ subs. Do you guys get tip requests from the delivery person? I assume I am going to get an envelope requesting a tip every few months, the same as I do with my local paper. Is this correct? What is a fair tip to leave?
No I don't. But I live in a multi unit building. I think there's a professional way to handle this that is dependent on two factors: your intention to maintain the service and the effectiveness of the deliverer in question.

For instance, because this is a residential facility, the issues many encounter with weather is of no consequence. But if you reside in a semi-detached or fully detached building, access the quality of the product you receive. Is it torn? Is it wet? Does the deliverer place it inside a bag on certain occasions or at all times? What about missed issues? Is he quick to respond? Little things like these address their degree of professionalism and suitability for a small thank you. In most instances these are given in gift card form during the holidays. But if you feel you've encountered impeccable service an impromptu thank you is fine to dispense.

However, I do not agree with the manner he is presenting the topic nor should the recipient feel pressed to respond. Good service speaks for itself. It is the strength of the service given and the professionalism of the server which often influences their recognition. There is also the issue of perception that one cannot escape. The driver might assume you're of a specific financial demographic based on several factors, including the paper delivery! Without realizing you've snagged it without cost. The Wall Street Journal's market is for the financially astute and affluent niche. Reading the bloody thing takes more hours than the average consumer has at his disposal. And that's the point and then some.

In a roundabout way you're receiving this request because the individual believes you can afford to provide it. Smilie

Just depends on the magazine, how often it's published etc For magazines published once a month it can take anywhere from 8-12 weeks to get your first issue (sometimes sooner).

Did you refer 5 friends for an extra $15 as mentioned in post #1? Other than that, no, not much else.
