This week, Amazon Wireless got Kyocera Event Smartphone [amazon.com] on sale for $49 (regular price $79.99). No contract is required! The shipping is free.

This might not be the most powerful Android device out there (duh!), but for only $49, it's still a great and snappy entry-level no-contract smartphone. It has 1000MHz Snapdragon processor and runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS.

Most other cheap prepaid Androids I've tried such as Optimus Elite, PCD Chaser, AT&T Fusion, etc., have noticeably slower processors and run on an outdated Android 2.3. Also, for some reason, this Kyocera phone's battery life is A LOT better than those guys.

Other features: 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen, Wi-Fi and microSD capability, 3.2 MP camera with LED flash and video camcorder, Visual Voicemail, Stereo Bluetooth, Light Sensor, Eco Mode, etc.

UPDATE: TARGET NOW HAS AN EVEN BETTER DEAL ON THIS PHONE:

Great deal. Can anyone comment on the stability of this device while using wifi without voice and data? Looking for a cheap wifi android device with camera to use as a wireless surveillance cam.

I never say not possible, but you would need to figure out a lot of stuff on your own, find drivers, MSL numbers, and reprogram the PRL. I've always been able to reprogram a phone, but some are just too much of a PITA to be worth the effort.

By the way, if you don't want to use this on Virgin, you could use it as an mp3 player, skype phone, Internet radio, play games, etc.

Can this be used as a wifi-only device / mp3 / video player without buying any minutes? I am looking for a new mp3 player and was debating on the galaxy player, but this would be a lot cheaper. Would that be a foolish idea?

See my previous post. It would be fine. Just dismiss the activation prompt when you first start it up. You can also delete the activation program so it doesn't keep bugging you (YMMV).

theres NO REASON why you can't.

It can be used as mp3/video player/picture viewer/porn viewer.
infact you can shut off the mobile carrier radio for improved battery life.

also you can use it as a OFFLINE gps via free apps like (I forgot the name but google it)

on top of that there are TONs of apps and games you can install it

BTW: just noticed the screen is IPS.
It's amazing how much technology $50 can buy now. (I remember the first "palmsize PC" back in 1998... 320x240 res, 8MB ram thats used for storage and apps and a blazing 16mhz or was it 75mhz processor $299).. you kids are so spoiled these days

should note that I presume you cannot use this if you want to keep a grandfathered $25 plan

I have a kyocera rise I got from Target during the Christmas deal and it blows. So buyer beware. Mine is slow, glitchy and the voice to text works worse than it did on my gingerbread optimus v.

well, I'd rather buy a used Droid Incredible, Droid 2 Global or DX at $50 for marginal better specs and ease with mod and/or flashing with carriers.
3.5" screen, kind of tiny. droid eris has a similar screen, yet you can get a decent one for about 25 bucks.
this phone may be new, yet its hardware or technology doesn't advance much than those top-notch phones 2 or 3 years ago.

If only I didn't have to give up my grandfathered $25 plan, I would get this.
