This week, Amazon Wireless got Kyocera Event Smartphone [amazon.com] on sale for $49 (regular price $79.99). No contract is required! The shipping is free.

This might not be the most powerful Android device out there (duh!), but for only $49, it's still a great and snappy entry-level no-contract smartphone. It has 1000MHz Snapdragon processor and runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS.

Most other cheap prepaid Androids I've tried such as Optimus Elite, PCD Chaser, AT&T Fusion, etc., have noticeably slower processors and run on an outdated Android 2.3. Also, for some reason, this Kyocera phone's battery life is A LOT better than those guys.

Other features: 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen, Wi-Fi and microSD capability, 3.2 MP camera with LED flash and video camcorder, Visual Voicemail, Stereo Bluetooth, Light Sensor, Eco Mode, etc.

UPDATE: TARGET NOW HAS AN EVEN BETTER DEAL ON THIS PHONE:

well, I'd rather buy a used Droid Incredible, Droid 2 Global or DX at $50 for marginal better specs and ease with mod and/or flashing with carriers.
3.5" screen, kind of tiny. droid eris has a similar screen, yet you can get a decent one for about 25 bucks.
this phone may be new, yet its hardware or technology doesn't advance much than those top-notch phones 2 or 3 years ago.
I once made a mistake of buying a used phone and will never do that again. Thanks but no thanks, and good luck on your scavenger hunt smh shake head

I am new to prepaid plans. Does this get activated immediately after purchase? I want to buy it for in-laws who live out of the country.

I want to know if I can activate and cancel anytime they visit, about a month at time, a couple times a year. Activation fees are not a big problem, but any knowledge on that would be appreciated too. Thank you for your help, reps given for answers Smilie

Any specific reasons why? I've bought a couple off craigslist that were absolutely fine after I made sure to test the radios and screen on the spot.. never really had any trouble with a phone dying on me.

its too bad i cant upgrade my mom's emergency UTstarcom Slice phone. it costs her $5 a month @ a usage rate of 20 cents a minute on the original prepaid plan, but its a great emergency phone. battery has lasted over 5 years, but is beginning to wear out, yet the signal strength is 4 times better than my samsung galaxy s2.

Yes, you can do that no problem. I don't believe virgin has activation fees, but the only service period is monthly. If your in-laws stayed for 5 weeks, you would have to pay for 2 months, no way to just add an extra week. Just don't set up autopay and when your paid month runs out the service stops. Next time they visit just sign back into the same accounts you set up the first time you activated and add money for a new month. Keep track of the sign in info for each phone somewhere (phone number, password and pin #).

it will work fine for that, you buy a month at a time so just pay whenever they come. You can use it as a WiFi device when they aren't around or just stick it in a drawer until they come back. There are no activation fees just the cost of the top up cards.

I'll wait for another deal for the $50 HTC One V.
that one
- have a very nice screen
- higher res camera (the kyocera event camera sucks beyond belief)
- higher resolution screen
- nicer build quality.

Great deal. Can anyone comment on the stability of this device while using wifi without voice and data? Looking for a cheap wifi android device with camera to use as a wireless surveillance cam.
I'm kinda in the same boat... I just want a phone for my daughter to play android games on. If battery life is good without a data or phone line... this is a steal.

Afraid of giving up your grandfathered $25 a month plan? Do yourselves a favor, rip off that band-aid!

Android 4.0 phones from Virgin are so much better than the 2.3 phones that the extra $ is worth it.

When Target puts the pre-paid Virgin cards on sale at 15% off, buy a bunch with a Target CC and you'll effectively get down to $30 a month. That extra $60 per year is so worth it for a much better experience.

I'm just saying...

Kudos to the other SD minds that instantly saw a cheap Android version of the ipod touch for $50 + memory card cost. My kind of clever people.

OSMand~ [f-droid.org] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OsmAnd

Available from the F-Droid OSS store [f-droid.org]

Routing is curious, but it works fine with my non-data CLIQ2.
