This week, Amazon Wireless gotKyocera Event Smartphone [amazon.com] on sale for $49 (regular price $79.99). No contract is required! The shipping is free.

This might not be the most powerful Android device out there (duh!), but for only $49, it's still a great and snappy entry-level no-contract smartphone. It has 1000MHz Snapdragon processor and runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS.

Most other cheap prepaid Androids I've tried such as Optimus Elite, PCD Chaser, AT&T Fusion, etc., have noticeably slower processors and run on an outdated Android 2.3. Also, for some reason, this Kyocera phone's battery life is A LOT better than those guys.

Other features: 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen, Wi-Fi and microSD capability, 3.2 MP camera with LED flash and video camcorder, Visual Voicemail, Stereo Bluetooth, Light Sensor, Eco Mode, etc.

UPDATE: TARGET NOW HAS AN EVEN BETTER DEAL ON THIS PHONE:

Back a few months ago they had an LG Slider for $20 and then I got $17 back from cashback site, so $3 total. I didn't activate it and just use it with wifi. I rooted/modded the phone and it works great. But I do not like how small the screen is (3.5"), so I'd would recommend a larger screen. Also, don't forget to check cashback sites.
thx for mentioning up CB site, i completely forgot that part...

I never say not possible, but you would need to figure out a lot of stuff on your own, find drivers, MSL numbers, and reprogram the PRL. I've always been able to reprogram a phone, but some are just too much of a PITA to be worth the effort.

By the way, if you don't want to use this on Virgin, you could use it as an mp3 player, skype phone, Internet radio, play games, etc.
Better than Skype, with Talkatone + Google Voice you could use this (or any compatible Android or iOS phone) on WIFI for free incoming & outgoing calls to any phone in the US. Almost like a free landline. You can't use it for 911, but you can use the phone's dialer for that without a plan as long as you're in a service area.

Also Talkatone works over 3G/4G, and combined with Google Voice is a good option to avoid the 300 minute voice cap on Virgin's $35/month unlimited data plan.

I have had horrible experience with Virgin Mobile (service). Would recommend to stay away from this company.

I have had horrible experience with AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and pretty much every other cell phone company. At least Virgin Mobile doesn't overcharge for it! laugh out loud

I am new to prepaid plans. Does this get activated immediately after purchase? I want to buy it for in-laws who live out of the country.

I want to know if I can activate and cancel anytime they visit, about a month at time, a couple times a year. Activation fees are not a big problem, but any knowledge on that would be appreciated too. Thank you for your help, reps given for answers Smilie
I have a VM optimus and an HTC one V and activation was not required though I did for both as I wanted to use the phone, no fee to activate, the optimus fell off and there was no fee there either. The only thing is these phones are by the month not the minute, the day to start the month is up to you just activate on that day. I used a top up card and that cost me like $3 in taxes/e911 and the CC/paypal I didn't get charged for it.(Still haven't figured that out) The top up means they can't really charge you for the next month cause they don't have your info and it saves you from having to fight with them.

They don't offer any sort of roaming capabilites!!! HUGE areas of the country offer no voice service. Lol. I thought it was a joke at first. Sadly....it is not. Check their coverage maps.
