Thread Details

Just saw this smartphone on sale for $39 at Target. Regular price is $79.99. No contract required!

This is a better deal than we posted yesterday where Amazon had it for $49.99.

Specs: Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, 1000 MHz Snapdragon processor, 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen, Wi-Fi and microSD capability, 3.2 MP camera with LED flash and video camcorder, Visual Voicemail, Stereo Bluetooth, Light Sensor, Eco Mode, etc.

This phone easily beats other cheap smartphones out there (Optimus Elite, PCD Chaser, Fusion, etc.) because it runs on Android 4.0 and has a noticeably faster processor and a modern design.

How do I transfer existing contacts and text messages from my T-Mobile MyTouch 4G running Android 2.3x to this Virgin CDMA phone?

I'm more than happy to pay up to $20 for a program that does this, as long as it does the job correctly.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

There are tons of free SMS backup & restore apps for Android phones in Google Play, just make your pick. Also, if you are using a thirdy-party SMS/MMS app (like Go SMS or Handcent) they usually have sms backup/restore features integrated.

As far transferring contacts, nothing could be easier - if your android phone contacts are automatically synced with your gmail accouint then they are always backed up on the cloud and next time you login into that same gmail account on your new android phone they will be synced and transferred during activation. If auto sync is disabled then you just need to manually sync your google account before discarding your old phone and make sure they are transferred to the cloud.

My local Target had just one Event left - they stacked it on the bottom shelf, no price, no nothing and were quite surprised when it rang up $40. I grabbed it to have el cheapo internet radio/mp3 player/remote for my streaming box. They also had VM Samsung Entro pay-lo flip phone for all of $4.99

Virgin Mobile runs on the nationwide Sprint Nextel network. If Sprint gets a good coverage in your area you'll be fine. If not - you won't. Plain and simple.
Personally, I am getting a better voice and data reception with VM than I had with AT&T. I live in Washington/Baltimore area.
To my knowledge (as a VM customer), VM only works on the Sprint digital network. If you go outside the digital zone, there is no roaming to other digital/analog towers. So if you live in ND, SD, Montana, WY, rural CO, rural AZ, rural UT, rural NV, etc....good luck.

I use SMS Backup+: https://play.google.com/store/app...sync&hl=en . It's free (and ad-free) and backs up your text messages to your gmail.

Another option is SMS Backup& Restore: https://play.google.com/store/app...tore&hl=en but the permissions description implies that there are ads.

Any opinion on how this would work as a cheapo video player for the gym? I'm looking for something to play ripped DVDs while I'm on the treadmill. Can something like this handle smooth SD playback?

I have the Kyocera Rise, which I think has the same guts as this phone but adds a hardware keyboard. I can play ripped DVDs without issue.

Thanks OP. I've ordered a few screen protectors from that front page deal at Xtremeguard. There were no screen protectors for the Event so I went with some for the Rise. They are both 3.5" screens so I'm hoping that it will fit.

Probably the wrong place for me to ask, but has anyone used this phone as a target device for app development? Would I be able to use it as such straight out of the box?

What kind of "prepaid" plan can I get with this phone? I am thinking something along the lines of Tracfone (no monthly fee). Is there a VM plan without the monthly fee? (not just contract free).

The GPS service called "Maps" that came with the phone is usable even if the phone is not activated. So you can still use GPS satellites even if you're phone is unactiviated.
Also, I currently use a GPS app called "Waze"
I simply save the locations that I want to go prior to getting into my car (where I am not in wifi range). The saved locations will still be on the phone and you can use it without wifi.

If anyone uses a GPS app that they recommend without requiring wifi, please do share. Smilie
try navigon. they have offline maps that u can dl to the phone. thus it works with gps signal without needs of wifi nor 3g

With this phone, if you want to get Virgin Mobile service, you ave to get a monthly plan. Their cheapest is $35/ month for unlimited data and text and 300 minutes. http://www.virginmobileusa.com/ce.../overview/

Probably stupid question, but does this need to be activated to use it just for WiFi. In other words do I need to purchase a plan if initially going to use it for WiFi?
You don't have to activate it to use on wifi

Yeah, that's what I thought. Its still a recurring monthly fee to keep an active phone and not truly prepaid. With Tracfone I average $7/mo. of about as much voice/data I have use for. But they don't have Android phones. I guess I'm better off getting something like FreedomPop to use with Android phone I have, $35/mo does not sound like a good deal at all for my usage needs.
